So I've narrowed my search down to the Omega Planet Ocean, and the Steelfish. I know the Steelfish is discontinued and therefore highly unlikely I'll find a brand new one. I was wondering if one of these watches would hold it's value better then the other over the next 3-5 years? Is one more reliable then the other? How do they compare as far as frequency of being serviced and cost involved? Any other attributes I should be comparing that you can suggest? Thanks!

Steelfish are still out there, new, at some of the lesser volume Breitling dealers. I saw a couple two weeks ago, though I don't know how much that store discounts them. They are fewer and further between, at least in the Phoenix area.

The PO is better known and, I think, may hold resale a little better. Last new list price I saw for a Fish was 3160 or so, and new purchases with 20% or more discounts if you asked have frequently been reported on this site. That's what I got in March. I don't know what PO retail list prices have been, but I think similar discounts have been available. Right now, used PO prices look to be 2-500 higher than for the Fish with a Pro 2 bracelet. I think there is a demarcation between older Fish with the Pro 1 Bracelet and with the most recent with a Pro 2. From what I've seen maybe 2-300 more for a Fish with a Pro 2.

Any difference between them as far as resale and reliability/servicing times are minor. At the very least, neither issue should be significant enough for you to buy the one you like less.

I disagree - IMO, Omega is a more reliable watch and even though there are plenty of POs out there, the market for Omega is larger than the Steelfish and the POs tend to retain more of their value.

I doubt if we'll reach consensus on this forum though

I think they are both pretty reliable but I totally disagree on Omega having better reliability with the coaxial movement. There have been problems widely reported over at WUS and other boards about reliability issues with the coaxial. I still think they are overblown but I don't even think its a contest, the more basic ETA movement in the Fish is more reliable. The flipside, though is accuracy. Even though the Fish is COSC, I do believe the Omega is more accurate, again due to the coaxial movement.

That said, I do believe they are close enough on those two criteria that it doesn't make a difference.

Last post sounded a bit contradictory, what I meant to say is that while I think the simpler movement in the Fish is more reliable, the reported problems are not frequent enough to dissuade me from a PO.

in the UK at least, breitlings dont hold their value as well as omega's

Neither will hold it's value very well but most watches don't. Unless you plan on selling it I wouldn't worry about it, or you can find a nice second hand one and let someone else take the hit.

As far as durability my PO has gone through a lot with me in the past 4 months and it still looks brand new and works like a champ. It took a T-ball bat straight to the crystal and didn't have a mark on it and is running fine.

Co-axial is simpler servicing, but whether that will translate into cheaper servicing is debatable. Omega also cover the co-axial with a 3 year guarantee vs. 2 year on Breitling which will help resale in the early years.

However, I do think that buying a watch for residual value when the difference between them is only going to be a few hundred bucks at most is the wrong approach - buy the one that you like the most.

Personally I prefer the SF looks wise and it felt better on than the PO, the price after discount is not a lt as stated previously.
Picked my fish up a week ago and can't stop looking at it, th PO seemed a little (dare I say) boring in comparison. Also when I got the appraisal for my insurance with the recent price increase my watch gained £290 which is about a 27% discount in total.
Just go with whatever you feel more drawn to

I'd go for the Steelfish - hands down.

But that's a personal choice, you should go for the one that speaks to you more. But, Omega is better known out there than Breitling, especially among non-WIS. That could also explain the difference in their residual value.
