So, I went to Wrigley Field on Saturday to witness my beloved Chicago Cubs get beat (again) by the White Sox. While I was there I glanced over at the gentleman sitting next to me. Now, I have never claimed to be any kind of expert, BUT with all of the pictures that I have seen on here of the Sub c, I thought for sure this guy was wearing one. So, I casually asked if he was wearing the new ceramic sub... His answer, "I have no idea what you are talking about, I have had this watch for the last 20 years." I'll tell you what, that thing looked perfect to me... the bracelet the face the case... not a scratch (from what I could see.) I guess the point, is that it is pretty cool, Rolex hasn't changed or deformed one of their iconic pieces... unlike you know who...

I noticed I have yet to run into a dude with a nice watch get technical... especially Rolex...

I guess us WIS are a rare breed... :(

Not to hijack the thread but I've ran into one guy who had an SS Datejust with Romanson a cream dial and I said "nice watch... do you collect?"

He said, "thanks but no... but this one is a rare one... it's got the Roman numerals on the face"...

This is a large part of the reason I've become a Rolex convert over the last year or two. If I'm going to spend that much on a watch, it's nice to know it won't look horribly dated in 20 years.

I suppose you could argue a few sizes and variations, but I think the Navitimer is a safe bet now and for the future as well.

Good point Scott. If I were to get another Breitling now it would be a Navi for sure.

As much as I really enjoy this forum, I will concede to the fact that "most" people who own nice watches do not get technical about them...and me personally, I can understand someone liking one model over another just because of "roman numerals." I love watches with Arabic numerals - it's just my thing.

With that said - I just spoke to my AD today to get a Rolex SeaDweller 16600 - no date bubble. Say what you want, but Rolex makes some pretty nice "timeless" watches and I love the OPs story...

:yeahthat

once you get into Rolex you seem to stay into Rolex. And the sub is that iconic piece. I mean really is there a better watch for every occasion? if there is I havent seen it.

oh no don't get me wrong... I'm a recent convert as well... my point was to relate to the OP's story... most of the time IMO most people buy a nice watch but they have no clue to about their watch... the gentleman I ran into insisted that his datejust is "rare" because of the roman numerals on the dial... we know that is hardly the truth with datejusts...

I have always liked and wanted a Dateless Sub . Every six months I go to an AD and try one on . I always leave without it because it just feels too small . The Deep Sea feels too bulky . If they made a 42mm dateless Sub I would be the first to buy one .

My Sub was always "THE" only watch worth wearing as far as I was concerned. Before I bought mine I did not even wear a watch. I will never sell my Rolex even when I expand on wearing other gear. I just couldn't part with it, I waited and admired it for too long until I finally owned it.

It is probably the most recognized and replicated/copied design over the last 25 years. I have always loved the watch and out of many expensive (and in hindsight) questionable purchases in my life this is nearly the only that is without an ounce of regret.

I have worn this watch every day for nearly 8 years. It is still nearly perfect and it is only recently that I have decided to find another watch. I have admired a few over the last couple years and have decided that the Breitling is going to be that watch. Likely the Avenger although I am trying to get used to the idea of a 45mm watch that's also much thicker then my 40mm Sub. I do like that more rugged look. Still trying to see if I can pull it off with my T-Rex wrists.

I saw the price of the Sub with date is now 8k. I bought mine from an AD back in 2002 or 2003 new/cash for what I remember was just under 3k.
The dollar has since started competing with the Lira so don't blame Rolex. It's not overpriced, its the dollar that's undervalued or better yet "Devalued".

I do like and agree with the general consensus about the watch though. Rolex is the "gateway drug" for watch enthusiasts that afford such things. I always admired them before and even after I owned mine.

That's one great feel about the Rolex. The values go up and the watch stays the same. Just sold my 2nd Sub a couple of months ago. :| Thinking it would spring more Daytona time on my wrist. Boy was i Wrong. Miss the everyday look, feel and comfort.
