Yep...it's pretty hard to argue against a grail.

As you say they are different beasts with pros and cons either way IMO.

Rolie - pretty common (relatively speaking), but a totally timeless icon with a true in-house movement.
MMC - pretty rare (again, relatively speaking), but pretty unknown outside of WIS circles and with a movemnt based on the ETA 2892.

Personally I don't overly like either, but on balance I'd definitely go with the Sub C. (As I've said before, the only Rolex I personally hanker after is a Deepsea).

My thoughts exactly, apart from the last paragraph. I like them both a lot, but would take the Sub in a heartbeat.

The flip side of better discounts on the UN is depreciation and poor resale - another factor worth taking into account.

Sub-c without a doubt. I have wanted to like UN for some time now, but when I look at them in person they just leave me wanting more. I can't put my finger on it, but it just lacks something.

The Sub-c on the other hand is MORE impressive in person. I actually became a bigger fan of it once I tried it on (especially the new green ceramic). I know that it is a very common watch, and that many non-WIS buy them as a status symbol, but I can (and will) overlook that because the watch is that nice.

The irony is that I don't foresee ever selling the Sub.

JS, I think the choice is obvious. Its the Sub. Its your grail and you don't foresee selling it if you ever had it. I bet that if you go with the UN it wont quite, quench your thirst so to speak, you'll still covet the Sub when you see it around. The reverse, might not be true. That is, if you go with the Sub, you wont be kicking yourself each time you see the UN

This reminds of what I said about the Sub in another thread, which is that it's an itch I still haven't scratched. Good observations, Alex. I've pretty much drawn the same conclusion - I like the U.N., but ultimately what I'm trying to do is find a way to get the satisfaction of a Sub without getting a Sub. In the end, I might as well get a Sub. Thanks again, everyone, for your comments.

Edit: I guess I could have figured this out by looking at one simple fact: the Sub is the only watch I've ever literally had dreams about. It was about turning that bezel...like buttah.

I didn't foresee selling my GMT IIC so I know the feeling. But it's up for sale now, to be replaced with a Sub C. It's reassuring that I'll get a decent return on it. Even if you never sell it, it's a good feeling to know that your asset is holding value well.

my vote goes SUB c. it just is that perfect watch. look at it this way, if you buy the sub and you get bored, there will be dozens of people that will take it off your hands. can you say the same thing about the UN??

Rolex is the safer bet out of these 2. JMO

Sub c for me too; it's just such a classic elegant watch! Not a massive fan either of the UN's which helps the decision :D

Sub C without a doubt. I am having a serious love affair with my LV, however I think it is a bit one-sided. She is getting sick of me drooling all over her 24/7  . I tell her that it is a compliment but she doesn't understand. My fiancée is starting to question things.... And so is my therapist  .

yeah most women dont quite get the whole watch craze thing. even if they own a few nice pieces most dont appreciate them the way we do. i have met a few WIS women on the TRF boards. but its far a few between.

If you wear it during lovemaking, you're probably still OK, unless: (1) you start calling the watch's name instead of your fiancee's (and if you have named it, that could be another sign of trouble), and/or (2) you're wearing it, but not on your wrist.

The other day girl friend of mine asked me something along the lines of "why do you like watches so much?" I showed her some youtube videos of gyrotourbillons and hybris mechanica and stuff like that. Then she said she now understands. She probably just wanted me to stop playing videos.

BTW, those videos are even more amazing when youve been drinking.
