Does 'redial' mean that the dial is a copy made by an different manufacturer and badged as a Breitling, or so simply that the original Breitling dial has been replaced by the manufacturer.

It means someone has 'faked' the dial.

Ergo it's not a Breitling component part?

So essentially if I want a Breitling Giro, the best way is just to keep checking ebay in the hope that a decent (real) one comes up?

Yes, or Chrono24, or the major auction houses.

Maybe but not always. To me the word fake means an attempt to deceive. If everything else appears correct the dial could have been in rough shape and it was just restored. It does affect the value slightly but it's a toss up whether it affects the value any more than an original dial in poor condition. Personally I'd rather have one where the dial was redone than to try and live with a dial in poor original condition. Replacement dials for vintage watches are extremely rare and nos versions even rarer. Sometimes you just have to take your best shot with what you have. Here's one I received a few weeks back as an example. Genuine late 1930's breitling dial in extremely poor condition. Restore it or live with it?

For me it has nothing to do with resale or residual values per se; I simply want to feel that the watch I have is genuine (I have a vested interest - I earn my living from the Giro d'Italia) and that I'm not paying through the nose for something which is false.

I take your point about the condition in that what most appeals to me is that that particular watch is the fact that the dial) appears to be in good order.

OK so thanks to you lot I have the Giro d'Italia 1190 via Italian ebay, lovingly delivered to the lucky recipient's girlfriend (she's barred from this forum for having input an incorrect date of birth, apparently!). Anyway it's beautiful, but has a modern strap. If anyone knows can help in locating a proper one it would be appreciated.

Grazie mille.

Oh yeah, we're famous for banning people for entering their birth date incorrectly.

Seriously, no one would ever be banned for something so trivial, and we wouldn't even know.

Thought it seemed a bit odd, but no matter. Anyway, here's the watch if anybody is able to help.

congrats. happy we could lead you to your "right" Giro, you might have seen some offered for double of this price and more during the last weeks ?

actually, the mesh bracelet might be period correct or a little later, not bad at all. There were no real OEM straps in these times, the straps had unbranded buckles (some claim there were some two plane logo buckles, but this is disputed) and some of the straps I have seen as "NOS" only had Breitling imprints on the inside.

I actually like tan/honey croc or leather with these and buy mine from Italy, search for "Tradema Breitling", you´ll find some nice straps that go nicely with the vintage Breitlings.

That what I was thinking, put a Tradema on it. I bid on that watch twice the first couple of times it was listed but it kept disappearing and appearing again so I gave up. Nice looking piece though and I love the patina of the dial.

Much more like it - and at a much more correct price. I personally like that bracelet, but Tradema is a good suggestion.
