when i first started off in this watch thing, the very first piece that ever caught my eye was the b4b motors. The original one with the knurled bezel. everytime i saw the watch i would just drool. it was the ultimate have to have piece. i remember even being on my honeymoon in St lucia trying to find a Breitling dealer that sold the bentley line. unfortunately none of the AD's carried the bentley line on the island. i even dragged my wife to go watch shopping 2 days in a row. i dont think she minded that much since she got a watch out of it too. after searching around i finally settled for a corum admirals cup chrono 44. the key word being "settled". but even with this new piece i knew i had to own the motors. When i got back to Canada i ended up calling around and finding out that there was a new motors t speed that was going to be released, so naturally i got the AD to send me some pics and after seeing it, it was the must have watch. I would always look at my Corum and just say "its not large enough". something about owning a piece that was 48 mm (in my mind) was just the right size. nothing else even came close.

so the day finally came when i decided to visit the AD put in the order and leave my deposit. Almost 2 months from the day I ordered the watch I got a call letting me know it was time to come in and claim my watch. happier than a pig in S*** i went to my AD and got my watch.

not long after everything that i started obsessing over watches that were large size. if it wasnt 46mm or up i didnt even look at it. Which lead me to my next purchase of a brand new SA. The whole time all i could think about was dial size. i guess i never really considered my own wrist size (7 inches) and how the lugs fits on your wrist.

As of late i guess the bigger better mentality has just been washed out of my mind. all the pieces i seem to be looking at now are between 39-44. These just seem to fit my wrist the best.the bigger better mentality is just gone from my mind. now im just looking for pieces that will stay classic to me.

anyone else go through this?

I prefer a watch that is 40-44mm because of its projection of masculinity and the fact that my eyesight isn't what it used to be.

And that's all i have to say about that :)

You're not alone in this. I think flirting with the massive watches is almost a rite of passage in this hobby!

I went through the same, although to be fair I've always liked watches to be at least a certain size - i.e. over 40-41mm - simply because I'm 6' 2" and have reasonable sized wrists at 7.75". For a while I was in the "bigger is better" camp and I'd only look at watches between 46 and 48mm, while going as high as 49mm. However, I'd say my requirements have now stabilised to what I consider to my "sweetspot" in terms of watch diameter, and perfect for me is 44mm. Depending on the design I can go as low as 43mm or as high as 46mm, but generally no higher and no lower than those extremes. (The one major exception I can think of is the Ploprof as it's design with a lack of traditional lugs means that it wears much smaller than it's 48mm x 55mm dimensions suggest).

Basically I think that I've owned and tried on so many watches over the years that I just know what works for me and my wrist size. And I'm happy with that!

I've said it before, but I never did get this whole size thing. I rarely consider the size of a watch in making a decision whether to buy it because I am comfortable wearing sub 40mm watches and greater than 50mm watches. There are some practical considerations in theory - will it fit under a shirt cuff for example, but most of my big watches are not the kind of thing that you would wear with a suit anyway.

I don't think that a certain watch feels / looks too big or small, and I can also honestly say that no one has ever suggested that they felt that a watch was too big or too small on my wrist.

I guess that makes me lucky in that it gives me more range.

dont ask me why roff. all i can tell you is that when this whole watch craze started for me.....it was all about the bentley motors. i was drawn to it and its size. then for whatever reason 48mm just seemed like the ideal size for me. but the noob mistake that i made was not to think about how the lugs looked on my wrist. i guess i just wanted a big bad ass watch.

now the dial size is not the main criteria for me when picking a piece. the lugs and case have to sit properly on my wrist. gone are the days of wanting a big bad ass watch. i do wish that i had a larger wrist size cuz then maybe these larger watches would not look so goofy on me.

I think the absolute size is relativistic, anyway. Besides lug design, the dial plays a hotter role than mere millimeters in my opinion (i.e. a 42mm classic design with white dial and minimal bezel is likely to look larger on your wrist than a 44mm watch with a thick sporty bezel and dark dial).

Driver i cant help but chuckle....i think you are right "flirting with the massive watches is almost a rite of passage in this hobby". i dont know why but that statement rings so true for me. moving forward though i have learned my lesson. Today i got rid of my white dial SA and bought a white dial chronomat evo with roman numerals. honestly it was the right move for me. i know look down at my wrist and see a good size sports watch and not a dinner plate....lol
