For every miracle purchase from those who look like deadbeats, there are countless encounters with actual deadbeats. It beats one down after awhile.

While a salesperson should never insult or act snobbish to a potential customer, just don't act surprised when you don't get the red carpet rolled out if you don't "look" the part...

Put yourself in their shoes for a moment and think about what goes on in that place everyday. You have to stand on your feet every day for at least 8hrs. You're paid on commission so you run the roller coaster of getting your hopes up and down all day long with people maybe buying and maybe not buying. Pressure from the owners and management to perform, often without the ability to discount. Dealing with the real wealthy who are generally awful to sell to... Blah blah blah. The job kinda sucks. So when you bounce in there looking like the last ten dudes who were just strolling through (wasting their "up), you're going to get some blowback from how crummy the job experience is..

Fleet to start i never intended this thread to be a " hey how bad have you screwed a salesman or gotten screwed by one" but rather one that showed some good experiences fun experiences and those who have had bad ones. to reiterate Sales people are in a customer relations occupation. if I were dressed like a bum looking at watches and saw that a saleman was buisy or had the potential for a large sale I would invite them to take it and if they were forward and asked to help someone else I would gladly let them without blowing them off. But if they were indirectly blowing me off and treating me second rate I would have a problem. like i said in my post the salesman that helped me was not rude and was still trying to sell me on some spendy watches he just had no idea that i had dropped 10k in there in the past few months. and I agree I don't want to dress up to shop so I can show a vendor how much class I have. in fact when I do pull the trigger on a Patek i can guarantee i will be in shorts and flip-flops

not to be an a$$ but I am pretty sure that most people know why they are not treated like royalty when they are not wearing a crown. But again this post wasn't put here to see how we could mess with sales people, and I am sure most of us don't need explanations and excuses for upset and ignorant sales staff. I will acknowledge your point here just want to say this is not really the place to post it unless you are trying to redirect the forum or just get a rise out of some people. So lets please get this back on track, and if you like conflict i will be more willing to debate ( not argue) opinions via pm

Ok. I live in Orange County, CA. When I was in the market for a watch for myself and my dad, I went into torneau.

I know they are horrible, but they had the best selection and I wanted to see a few in the metal. When I asked for help, mind you I was dressed in jeans and a sweatshirt, this kid looked at me like I was homeless. I had him pull out a few watches, tried them on, and asked my girlfriend for her opinion. At one point I asked him what the price was on the navi world, already knowing list, his response expensive.

I was shocked to say the least. I feel like I got pretty womaned. Needless to say I didn't give them any of my money.

A few days later I went to my Local AD and bought a Montbrilliant legend limited and a Montbrillant datora for my dad cash. The next day I went back into Torneau and the same kid was working. I asked him for help and he asked if I was "Just" there to look again. I said no and asked him to size my new bracelet for me.

I know it was childish, but I had him size it 2 more times until it was the way I had it when I walked in.

I was just so mad at the way I was treated in that store. It was unbelievable to me. Got to love Torneau!!

I've never had a bad experience at an AD despite my often casual clothing. However, there's another way to play the same game. When I was young and had just got my driver's license, me and a friend used to dress very nicely and have the entire "rich kid" look (without being offensive or rude). Then paid visits to sport car dealers and had no problem at all taking new Porsches, Lamborghinis and Lotuses out for a test spin. Very handily I had access to an airstrip nearby where we really could test the engines. No purchases made though, and that must have driven the sales persons mad. A bit childish, but hey, it's so long ago it doesn't count.

When I was 20 I went to buy my second car. I wanted a new Golf Gti. It had just come out and there was a 6 month delivery time for them. I´ve always looked much younger to my age. I walked into a VW dealer with a friend. There was a brand spanking Gti center stage. All the sales people were standing in a hudle chatting and they didn´t give us the time or day. My friend walked in the midle of their pack and said that, that young genteleman (pointing me) would RIGHT NOW like to buy that individual car there (pointing the Gti) if that´s no bother to you. Needless to say we got the best service and I got their show car the same day. That was a good day! :)

In Finland you can get your license when your 18. My friend worked at Ford at the time. A 16 year old boy drove a scooter to their shop. He walked up to my friend and just said straight up that he would like to buy a new Ford Puma and handed him the cash for it. That was the quickest, easiest and wierdest sale my friend ever made. The boy picked up the Puma in a week with his mom. You really never can tell, can you?

A little less then a year ago I was headhunted by a company where I now coach car sales people for big chains. So I see some funny personalities and you really couldn´t believe how bad some are. The funniest sales strategy that one old salesman told me was, the way he knows somebody is really buying a car is, that he waites untill the costumer notices him. Then he starts to walk away. If the customer calls after him, he knows that the person really wants to buy a car. The shock is that this guy is the second biggest seller in the company of 200 people (and by a huge margin to the third)??? He never waists time with a customer the minute he gets any hint they´re not buying.

But as watch AD:s go. What i´ve worn or how I´ve looked has only once had a negative effect to the quality of service. Which is really surprising actually. I´ve used two AD:s regurlarly with my wife. One of them has yearly invited us to their VIP events. Last year I went With a friend of mine. We were casually dressed. I wore my AS and My friend had his Panerai. The owner of the company (who I never met before) was greeting every one and handing out Champaign. When we walked in he offerd my friend a glass and raised his look. You could see clearly him measuring us from head to toe and that he felt he made a mistake. So he just said to me that more champaign is coming in a minute. He had a full glass in his hand which he handed to a lady behind me. I never was offered one. I haven´t stepped into their store since and my other AD:s got all my bussiness since then.

i would rather be ignored by a vendor than belittled, especially when car buying a lot of time i want to spend a while just browsing without a someone over my shoulder distracting me. Reading all these made me think; when i dress like a bum ( or like i think of it as just getting dressed) it cost me a total of 30 bucks ( 19 jeans 11 sweatshirt) ( not gona nickle and dime the skivvies so don't ask) but i have friends that go out of there way to look bumish and spend good money on their cloths ( 200 + for jeans ) and the best is last year i was out with a buddy, he was wearing a old Cubs zip up sweatshirt, I laughed at him and said i had the same one ( which i did, and i have had since 1989) his looked like it was from 1989 but it was new and cost him around 300. So to kinda get off track some times jeans and a sweatshirt can cost more than a decent suit.

Exactly. I've had clients that I was sure I would conclude a deal with and I didn't. I've had others that I took care of just like the first but was not expecting any deal and a got a deal nevertheless.
