I bought my 312 and GMT IIc (which is similar to the Sub C) on the same day in August 2010. The Pam is now gone and evrytime I look down at the GMT I say ooooooooo. I got very tired of the size of the Pam and I never wore it too work, i didnt like the way it looked with a suit. The Pam is a gorgeous watch with a great brushed finish, endless strap options, and a very accurate in house movement but between the two I much prefer the Sub C. Easy call for me.

That's why I ended up bucking the trend and got the smaller (40 mm) Panerai. At that size it still wears as large or larger than the Sub, and on black croc it's what I wear with a black/charcoal/grey suit. Very simple and elegant. I initially thought the strap game was really for the big Panerai but I'm now warming up to trying some out.

The GMTIIc is a great watch. Based solely on looks, I'd take it over the sub. (It's also just a touch thinner, for whatever that's worth.) The Sub is more functional for my purposes, though, so I'd go with the Sub. Both watches are great.

I have nothing more to add other than the fact that my PAM works quite well with suits and I find it very comfortable. I even wore it with my tuxedo when I got married a few months back.

I think most agree that the Rolex is a better "everyday" watch - but it really comes down to being a personal choice.

Hmmmm....23 year old brand new finance exec. In his work place, who that matters most might be judging his watch. I'm betting they won't be 23 or 33, maybe 43, more likely 53 or 63.

Predictable? Sure, as predictable as the appropriate office wear. As predictable as the appropriate office behavior.

Just a couple thoughts.
I think I'm missing what you mean Sharkie... :?

My point is that the Crown will be a lot more recognizable -- and on a 23 yr old, would imho result in a more cliche "lookatmeIhaveaRolex" perception, in or out of the office (no disrespect to OP and all the other 23 yr olds out there who appreciate Rolex as a WIS and not for the bling factor please).

As to the 43, 53, or 63, I doubt they would be impressed either or... -- all the senior finance guys I know wear Patek

im totally biased as i recently bought a PAM 312 and to be honest i cant stop staring at it. i have a relatively thin wrist but it just looks amazing

never really cared for rolex watches, absolutely no argument about heritage etc but aesthetically, nothing about it appeals

i know it's off topic but the navitimer caliber 01 is quite nice and limited edition too within the same price range

....now if only i can find a mustard yellow croc strap for my PAM...

I think the point is that at that age group, unless they are WIS, many of them won't even know what a Panerai is. At the larger size, compared to their Pateks, if that's what they wear, a 44mm Panerai might seem cartoonishly large, and less mature. Now, that's a lot of stereotyping, but if there is a perception piece to this, and the older non-WIS folks are still wearing 38-40mm watches, the big Panerai could invite a perception which is unintended, incorrect and unfortunate.

I have to say that I am a little shocked that the vote count is currently 20 to 19...very interesting to see that it has been so even to this point...just goes to show that these are 2 great choices. There really isn't a losing option here IMO.

Just my taste and I've had the older Sub and many PAM'S, but the Sub is too small for me personally. As others have stated even the smaller 40mm Panerai wears larger than the Sub. Both are very nice but I always get more comments on my Panerai. Not that that's a deciding factor... :)

Voted for the Pam! I personally don't like the new ceramic bezels Rolex introduced in the last couple years! But I would have voted differently if you pointed with the older Sub 16610 model!
