I'd still go with the Sub C. You don't need to change looks on it - it is perfect just as it is. And it grows on you more and more as you have it. If it came to it, it would be my "one watch."

You've summed up my feelings on it pretty well, even though I don't have one. It's a great single timepiece, if all you're looking for is a standard watch.

And you hit the nail on the head with the bezel turning. That thing turns like buttah. Right after I tried one out, I literally had dreams about it. I'm not kidding.

For a 23 yr old finance executive on the up & up, a Rolex seemed so predictable, so... meh, imho. The 312 would be PERFECT.[/quote]

Geez...could you have picked 2 watches that are more different? It is extremely difficult to compare these...I personally like the 312 better, but if you are looking for 1 watch to fit the bill for all occasions then the Submariner is probably more versatile.

Get the Sub-C then start saving for the 312...that would be a great 1-2 punch.

:yeahthat Exactly my thoughts

For an all around watch, my vote goes for the Sub-C. If you said the 328 (the 312 with the bracelet), then it would be another story.

OK - I'm going to approach this from a little bit of a different angle.

If you're 23, in my opinion, the Rolex is too predictable and too flashy. It's a better "everyday" watch and it's more versatile than the Panerai (and I'm a Panerai owner) - but again, for your age, very predictable.

If you like a large watch that's versatile for suit or beach, I'd go for something like the Omega Planet Ocean Big Size - the new chrono they introduced at Basel is just beautiful - but their current models are terrific as well. It'll be less $$$ than the Panerai or Rolex, but even more versatile, in my opinion, than the Rolex or the Panerai.

If an Omega is not an option, then I'd go with the Rolex over the Panerai as I think it will hold up better aesthetically.

Or better yet - get two watches for the amount of money you're going to spend on the Rolex or Panerai - for that amount of coin, you can easily afford a nice dress watch for work and a cool beater to wear to the beach and rough around in.

Well said Drtymrtini, especially on the Rolex. Waaaaaay too predictable for that age.

The PAM is far more unique. However, I'm biased as I will personally refuse to own a Rolex.

Rolex for me too (a neutral decision and not just because I'm not partial to Panerai). Out of those two options I just think the Rolex is more versatile.

Hmmmm....23 year old brand new finance exec. In his work place, who that matters most might be judging his watch. I'm betting they won't be 23 or 33, maybe 43, more likely 53 or 63.

Predictable? Sure, as predictable as the appropriate office wear. As predictable as the appropriate office behavior.

Just a couple thoughts.

Funny I wouldnt say execs wear rolex in my place was sat with the regional president last week and he is probably late fourties early 50's and on his wrist a panerai. I was surprised yet smiled could figure out what model. Every meeting he checks out my wrist. we give the top sales reps a rolex each year though.

The more I think about this I'd probably go with the 312 if I were you and pick up a second hand dive watch for beach and active type.stuff if you don't want to wear the 312.

I agree wholeheartedly....Cant go wrong with the Sub. It is like the solid white shirt of the worlworld. Predictable is not always the wrong, particularly in business.

Not that your watch will necessarily lead your boss to think you are more or less risky or different of a person, but I wouldnt base my decision solely on the fact that is is a bit cliche...

That being said I voted Sub-C

Out of those two, then definitely the 312. Now if the Rolex option was the Deepsea instead of the Subbie, I'd say go for the Deepsea, but as it's not, I'd say go for the Pannie.
