Ok, why do certain Breitlings, like my Navitimer, have a slightly domed crystal shape while others, like my B1 have a flat crystal? Is there a reason for the domed crystal besides just looking cool when you view it at an angle? :)

Thanks!
Dave

Hi Dave!

Welcome to the forum!

I'm pretty new here myself and also the proud owner of a navi!! :) To answer your question about the dome crystal - The reason it's that way is to permit the wearer to view the dial at almost any angle. If it were flat, the viewing angle would be reduced and the fine detail around the sliding bezel would not be as easily visible. Hope this answers your question. If not, there are some really knowlageable folks in here (not me!!) who would be happy to help out.

Regards,

Ken

PS - Post some pics of your navi - they're always welcome!! :)

The navi has a large area crystal with relatively thin sapphire, the doming of it adds strength, hence the slight doming of the superocean etc (for strength also)

Having a curved crystal will distort the periphery if not looked at straight-on, so therefore are you wrong??...not really but it depends on whether the crystal curvature radius is the same on the inside as outside.....I'm wearing my SO coral today and it has a more convex surface than concave inner side so acts a bit like a magnifying lens!, at extreme angles of view, it all gets a bit psychadelic, especially with a coral dial

Good question.

I would think it would be for aerodynamic reasons.

The sapphire is cambered (or convex) to both increase strength and it also helps to reduce reflections still further.
