Hi, wondering if anyone can advise.

I brought my Breitling Superocean 8 years ago. Went to get it out having not worn if for a few months to find rust on the inside of the glass and on the face.

I went to Goldsmiths who sent it off and found it passed waterproof testing and had suffered water ingress and will cost £1295 to repair.

The crown has only ever been undone to adjust the time if its not been worn for a while. Dived in it 7 years ago and possibly swam in it, but again that would have been a few years ago. Only wear it once every month or so.

Does anyone know of anything that can cause this type of problem. I also appreciate that even if something else could have caused this problem - its proving it !

:(

Has the watch been serviced in those 8 years?

If not then it's way past a service interval and the seals will likely have aged giving far less water protection so even something as simple as washing your hands could have caused it. Ask the AD to do a pressure test and identify where the failure is.

:idontgetit: I don't understand how it suffered water ingress if it passed waterproof testing. Has the back ever been removed and replaced in a humid environment? Even that is a real stretch. It could possibly cause a fogged crystal, but would hardly be enough moisture to turn everthing to rust.

If the warranty is long expired, you have very little recourse. For that kind of coin, I would certainly ask for a detailed estimate.

Hi is a pressure test different to a water test? Sorry its only now that there's a problem that I'm finding out about watches !!!

Its not been serviced in years unfortunately and I've never had the back off it either which is why I'm a bit confused :?

Personally I would be reading the riot act here! If it was proved secure with a test then..... get a solicitor involved....

I misread the part about passing the waterproof test passing, they are the same.

While I would never advise anyone against hiring a lawyer  , if it passed a pressure test with the crown fully secured, then the strong probability for water ingress is the crown not being fully secured while exposed to water. That is the most likely explanation and the most likely explanation usually wins. I'm sorry, but it sounds like a loser - even with a fine solicitor.

For that kind of money you could pick up a Mint 8 year old SO or even a newer model. IMO unless you have a sentimental connection to the watch buy a replacement and sell the old one for parts, bracelet etc to recoup some of the money.

Especially on a watch that hasn't been serviced in accordance with the recommended schedule.
