I have fallen pretty hard for the current Explorer II. I am truly "this close." Heck, I'm on the verge of putting 3 Lings on the FS board for that reason.

While I can't fault the bracelet/clasp improvements (awesome if fact - they got me to Rolex on the GMT Master and Sub), the added case size is irrelevant to me. But I really, really dislike that orange GMT hand. It just ruins it for me. And with the minimal discounting on the new one versus the better I can get on the current Explorer II, the actual cost difference is about $2,000. I know, i shopped discounts on the Explorer II at several 4 ADs today knowing the new one was coming and already know the minimal discounts available on the SS Sub C and GMT Master IIc. It was ready to go and supposed to be released last year, but Rolex held it back after intitially releasing a video.

No arguments or debates - it's but a matter of personal taste. Now who wants a 3 Ling package? I'm ready to go!! :)

So that's what you listed the three Lings for. I was wondering what kind of plan you were hatching out there. I think you should get the new one, keep it for a couple of months until you sell it to me then get the old one. That work for you? Or the other way around, I like the old style as well and would be perfectly happy with either ExpII.

The current ExpII is a classic in my opinion. I had one with a white dial and loved it.

I think the new version is a tasteful update.

I'd love one but, alas, I am never willing to pay the excess over retail to have a newly announced Rolex. Let the heat die down over the next few years and I could happily chase one of these.

As conservative as Rolex is, I doubt changes to the case will be significant--too many millions of customers expect minimal changes--aren't they still selling 36 mm cases? That's also why I suspect some will be upset with going to a 42mm case--their 40s will seem obsolete and they bought a Rolex in part to not have that kind of problem. 2mm is certainly modest enough, and if the case remains just a bit thinner than a Sub, I suspect it will wear well. I personally can't wait to see one--already broke my bank for a while, but to me, the white face on the old Explorer II seemed just a touch small. Hate to take off the new Panerai, but I think I'll wear my GMT with the fresh pepsi bezel tomorrow. Driving up to Vegas, I'll check out the shops.

I have read on TRF that quite a few people are upset about the move to 42mm, but I have a feeling that it'll wear well, and 42mm is still a pretty conservative size, considering that it'll probably be thinner than the 40mm Sub and GMT. I can't wait to see one in real life, I think I'm most happy about the upgraded bracelet though. The old one always felt flimsy, this one will have a new clasp and most importantly solid center links to give it a more substantial feel.

Here's a comparison wrist shot of the new black dial version next to a black dial 1655:

I'm liking it, especially the matte dial.

man im liking this piece more and more everyday. and its looks really good at 42mm on that wrist shot. this could be a serious contender for a person like me that has never liked rolex. this does draw me closer to taking the plunge one day on a rollie.

Thanks for the link. I'd like to see a comparo against a SubC, I've actually worn one of those...briefly.
