I took my wife out for dinner to celebrate out 15th wedding anniversary. We walked by a Tourneau store as we headed back to our car and I popped in just to have a "little look." That was the first mistake. I was really impressed with the Breitling lineup so I asked if I could "just try them on." Second mistake. We went home that night without the watch but I could not stop thinking about it. The next day I asked my wife if I could go back and get the watch and surprisingly she said yes! Knowing that she could change her mind any minute I jumped in the car and hauled it back to Tourneau. Well, I am now a proud owner of a blue face SA with the Pilot II bracelet. I have been wearing this watch for about a week now and I just can't wipe this smile off my face! Before I walked into that store I had no idea what a Breitling was but when I saw the SA model I just knew down deep inside that I had to have it. I have been up every night scouring this forum ever since the purchase and I'm afraid that I will be heading back to the AD much sooner than I thought. I still can't believe that I have this watch since all I've been wearing up to this point is my very reliable Seiko Kinetic. This is an enjoyable forum by the way! :D

Fantastic Choice, my first was a SA

Bet you are glad you got the pre-update dial, the makeover for this year swaps the numerals for stick indicators.....not as distinctive imho.

Hi Laieboy

I chuckled at your experience....when I walked into a watch store in St. Thomas in January....I was very much like you.....saw this neat watch....while I had heard of Breitling.....I had never tried one on nor knew much about them.....but I tried one on (Chrono Avenger)....and I loved the titanium......result: back to the ship with a new Breitling.

Fast forward to May....I now have 4 Breitlings.....had to find an out-of-town AD...to service me here in Montana (to few people to have an AD)....but found a rather happy AD in AZ.....that knew I needed a couple Super Avengers and a yellow Seawolf....and I am still smiling.

You story brought back those memories of the first night on the ship where I kept stealing glances at my new Ling.....tnx for the memories.

Terry

Well done!
My first Ling experience was similar, I was in Paris at Christmas and saw the Superocean Heritage in the window. Half an hour later I walked out with it  3 months later I just had to have a Super Avenger.
Next up is an Emergency Mission and then my first Panerai

I have been reading up on all the different Ling models and I'm afraid that my shopping list is getting longer by the minute! I promised my wife that this will be my first and last luxury watch. Well...

The taste of a delicious dinner is washed away with the first glass of water, but now you have your breitling to make that lovely taste stays on and on and on.... God know for how many nights to come!

So if you divide the cost of breitling with that number of nightsssss it won't be a very expensive dinner (IMHO) :D

congrats and wear it in health.

Loved your story! A little bit different than mine, when I got my first Breitling: About 20 years ago, I saw a Breitling Colt Quartz at a jewellery/watch store in a local mall. It had a rubber strap, and I just really liked the way it looked ( I have been a fan of Breitling rubber straps since then ). I wore that thing constantly for about 10 years. I paid $565. CAD for it. Ten years later, and AD downtown gave me $900. credit towards a SuperOcean, which I wore every single day for 10 years. Now I have new Steelfish and Blacksteel, the Blacksteel is on my wrist every day.
Anyway, I am certain that this is just the start of a long love affair with the Breitling line of watches. I am constantly looking at watches, much the same as some guys look at cars at the auto mall on weekends. I still keep coming back to Breitling!
Enjoy the SA!
Cheers,
Carl

I had the same experience recently with the purchase of my Breitling Bentley 6.75.

This is the first upscale (ie costs more than $100) I have ever bought, and the 2nd one I own, the first being an Omega Seamaster 120 from my father. I figured this would be more of a dressier watch for special occassions. I fell in love with it the moment I saw it in the store, the huge size, the shiny case and bracelet, and that beautiful silver dial with the date window on top and the sub dials in the 3/6/9 position. It s a really beautiful watch. I actually had my sights set on purchasing an SA or Navitimer World, but the 6.75 looked so beautiful on my wrist I could not resist. Ever since then it has been on wrist practically everyday except when I sleep, when I do house work, or when I feel it's going to get scratched.

Hey Laieboy, here is my suggestion: read up on the different Breitlings available, try them on if you can. At the end of the year, Macy's Jewel Gallery should have some kind of Breitling event, where they will offer 20% off retail. If you don't have a Macy's credit card, you can open an account at the same time and get 15 - 20% on top of the other 20%. You would end up getting your Breitling at about the same price offered by grey market dealers, but you'd be getting it from an AD. That's one of the reasons that I haven't opened a Macy's account, I'm holding that in my back pocket in case all the stars align and I'm able to buy a watch when the Breitling sale is on.

The only catch is that you have to keep checking with the staff on when the next event will occur. There is normally a one week "pre-sale" period where you can buy the watch of your choice and pick it up on the actual sale day. Most of the staff will also let you put a watch on hold for several days before the event, so if you wait until the day of the sale, all the good stuff might be gone.

At the last event, I had the store's only MOP dial, diamond bezel Chronomat on hold at least 10 days before the sale. If I had pulled the trigger on it, no one else would have gotten a shot at it. All I had to do was go back to the store when the pre-sale started and put the watch on a new Macy's credit card. In the end, $8,300 and change for that watch, out the door with all taxes in is a fabulous price (retail $12,500), but still way too rich for me.

If I had timed it right, though, I could have got my Steelfish from Macy's for less than I paid from a grey market source.

Great story and congratulations on the SA!

I would suggest alien13's way... Divide the cost for the SA with your 15 years of marriage - and the yearly cost for tributing the marriage isn't that high... Bad thing is that the wife might want a similar shoe/bag-account...
