There WILL be a proper update but I'm currently wrestling with my local BMW dealer's pathetic customer service, so I don't want to say too much until that is sorted out - you never know who reads these sites. Let's just say I had a fault develop within a day of ownership, then the dealership couldn't fix it in a day, and because they can never give me a courtesy car (I say courtesy car in its loosest sense as you actually have to pay for them! ) I had my car back unfixed to be rebooked. So they delivered it back with the fault unfixed plus as an added bonus a NEW fault that they have the audacity to claim is nothing to do with them! OK, so they have my car in for a day and just by pure chance it develops another fault the instant they drop it off?!? Riiiiiiiight. Frankly BMW are a joke when it comes to after-sales care in my experience. (And no this most definitely ISN'T the first time I've had issues with them). Love the cars, hate the dealers.

Just thought I'd let you all know, I think my daliance with deisel is likely to be EXTREMELY short-lived. I've had my 320d M-Sport for precisely two days, and I'm already hating it! Apart from the general lack of grunt, I'm not a fan of the low revs driving characteristics. I also hate the chugging at start-up and stopping. Yes, yes, I know you have to expect this from a diesel, but a 15 min test drive isn't really the same as driving to London and back. It sounds so like a tractor I have to keep checking in the rear-view mirror to make sure no-ones hooked up a plough to the bumper!

I give it no more than 6 months. If I could sell it tomorrow I would, but if I did it'd be the same as throwing several thousand down the drain given that the part-ex won't be anywhere near what I paid. I'm already counting the days to getting back into a petrol car. Yes, it'll cost more in fuel ecomony but at the moment I don't care. I want to enjoying driving again, and I want my 5 series back!

hey Driver8 any update on how you find the 320d now?

Like this I would imagine......................

Actually, I think it's more like this:

Really sorry to hear about that D8, I hope it will work out for you.

I had a totally different experience with my dealer. The pump of the front wiper of my 325i Touring decided to part with me in the middle of a really salty and wet freeway about three weeks back. Although the factory guarantee was over, BMW paid the cost of the part and the dealer paid 50% of the work.

Note: in Switzerland all services are free for the first three years or first 100'000 km.

I think diesels have come a long way in recent years. You only have to look at the amount of diesel cars on our roads these days. But diesel always used to be the cheap fuel, not anymore. Coincidence? Motorists have always been an easy target in this country.

And not all 4 cylinder BMW's are bad. Here is my Saturday car and I rest my case

You can rest your case Hightower, that's a legend of the most powerful letter of the world you have there with that M3 Evo II.

I'm in a similar boat.
My weekend toy is an Evo 9 FQ-360 and I'm getting at best 20mpg and thats through "light" driving.
Currently paying £1.37 on V-Power and getting shafted with the £420 12 month road tax.
This along with the twice a year service costs is making me think twice about Evo ownership.
It only gets driven once or at most, twice a week so seriously considering selling it and just making do with my "sensible" Golf.

What really gets me is I know of some other Evo 9 owners who are paying only £190 for their 12 month road tax because theirs is registered PLG.
Complete nonsense!

Mmmmm.....

The whole thing is quite depressing.

I've been driving diesels for about 5 years or so and currently my wife and I have a 320 D and a 520 D. I'm getting over 44 to the gallon in the 5 Series and I do like it - it goes OK when you need it to!

A couple of weeks back I filled up from near empty and it was over 80 quid! I reckon a full tank would be pushing 90 so it won't be long before that is over the hundred mark - for an ordinary road car - crazy

I got used to not stalling when pulling away and having to change down to get the revs up to get the thing moving.

I hope you either get used to the difference or don't get ripped off too much when changing.

As far as BMW service is concerned I don't think the make comes into it - unless you're driving a high end marque. They are all just concerned with one thing - doing as little for the customer for as much money as they can - that's life in the UK.

Chin up

Got a letter from DVLA (UK licencing people).

I have to renew the picture on my licence. THEY WANT £20 TO DO IT.

Dont they realise I'm still as good looking as I was 10 years ago.

Well, I think I am finally succombing to the UK Government 'taxed off the road' strategy!

My Hemi 6.1L V8 will be going.

However, I will not go down without a fight and one of these may be incoming.....................
