Except this - the vast majority of fine watches are sold to people who could care less - they go in wanting to be sold on something they think looks good and costs a lot. So the egghead who can educate likely ends up selling fewer pieces than the lounge lizard. That's not to say knowledge and salesmanship are mutually exclusive. But if I owned a shop and faced a choice between the extremes, I'd go with the one who sells more watches given the purchasing public at large.

In other words - I guess I would be Tourneau.

You may have a point with that, unfortunately. Too many consumers don't give a crap what they're buying so long as its "exclusive and expensive", which is part of what's hurt Rolex's brand image so badly with some knowledge junkie watch snobs, I'm sure.

As to the price of Birkins, in their defence, they're handmade by well-trained artisans, take over 24 hours to make, can be refurbished/restored to almost-new quality at the "Hermes spa" whenever they begin to look tired, and if well cared for, genuinely last a lifetime. I know several ladies who have Birkin and Kelly bags which were made in the 50s and 60s that were passed down to them from their mums that are still in very serviceable condition today.

I am both pleased and grateful to note that despite a 20+ year marriage, I never heard of Hermes or Birkin. Skated on that front! :woohoo:

You know my Johnston&Murphy SkiMoc pennies are handmade, take at least 24 hours, are refurbishable, and come in under $200. I doubt I'd put them in my will though.

I would like to thank everyone on this post because it has made my night. I have wanted a Breitling for years (purchased a fake in Tijuana when I was in college over 10 years ago). The day after this most recent Christmas, I was in California mall in Mission Viejo because I had to buy luggage to take home all of the presents my 15 month old received. I had looked at Tag's at a variety of dealers, but I knew I would be spending 2k and wishing I had a Breitling. After purchasing a large bag I looked at store directly across way and saw it was a Swiss Watch store. To my great joy they had Breitling's and I saw "my watch." I had to call the wife first and she told me to wait and find something in OR (we live in Vancouver, WA) so as to save the tax. I decided to face the short term wrath of the wife for the satisfaction of not letting "the one" slip away. Your comments just reinforced my happiness.

P.S. I have seen sweet Brietling's at CostCo by the airport and in Vancouver, but I wanted my 1st to be from an AD.

Well done Collier, it's good to listen to your heart from time to time :)

Yeah, just don't tell the wife that you could have phoned in the order from the Couve and saved on tax.

Well, a breath of fresh air just blew into Portland (along with the constant rain) - Carl Greve apparently lost their AD license according to our newest AD in Portland: Alex & Co. I stopped in today and they're in the process of getting the Breitling area in order. Right now it's just one small display case but I was told they would be getting a nicer section setup in the near future. They had a Breitling rep in the store as I was perusing. A middle aged blond lady, nice enough but wasn't too concerned with me as a customer. The salesmen were very nice and I look forward to taking advantage of our lack of sales tax soon. Yellow face Avenger Seawolf with an ocean racer strap perhaps? Works for me!

Cheers,
-Dan

Thanks for the update, Dan. I'll have to make it a point to swing by the next time I'm in Portland.

Wow. The horror stories...where I live in CT there are no less than...1, 2, 3, 4, 5....at least 6 ADs within a 50 mile radius, more if I venture into the New Jersey wilds. Temptation is around every corner. Perhaps that's the one positive that comes out of having so damn many banks and hedge funds in the area... :lingsrock:

Another plus: it just dawned on me I'll be able to utilize A&C for any service needs without the guilt trip of sales people looking at me with that "why didn't you buy it here?" face.

I'm selling a Breitling for a friend's estate and the Breitling site lists two retailers in Portland. WatchWorks in downtown Portland and Ben Bridges in Washington Square, Tigard-Beaverton suburb SW of Ptown.

I haven't talked with Watchworks, (though I'm about to try to find out if that is where my friend just had his Navitimer serviced), I did talk to Bridges about value. They told me I'd struggle to sell it without the box and they would give me 500.00 for it. So, if you want to deal with someone who wants to pay 10% of value to a dead guy's friend, go right ahead. I'll never step in their door, again, ever. Oh yeah, the box thing has turned out to be stinky BS, as well.
