Hi all

Am hoping someone would be able to advise me. Am looking to my Hubby a breitling for his birthday. We will be in cancun at the time and I believe it's quite good to get them from there ( we are in uk). Can anyone advise of a good first timer model ( it may be his only one as they are out of our price range but I have been saving for a while!!) also what price I should be expecting to pay in cancun if anyone has been?? And by how much should I hope to get them down to?? Am up for a bit of haggling ;)

Many thanks

Joanne

I was just in Cozumel and Costa Maya last week and I was offered 15% off retail and that was IT. I know that you can get a much deeper discount here in the States. I'm not sure about Cancun but I would imagine you are better off in the UK. Good Luck, and I'm sure your husband will appreciate his gift!

Not sure if you have to pay VAT upon return to UK, but Cancun is a duty free port and I saved that tax. Do your home work on what model you want, know your prices and strike a hard bargain. You've got to be willing to walk away from the shop if they won't come down. When you go to a shop there are so many to choose from that it will seem overwhelming. It's kind of like buying a new car. If the salesman knows you want it, they have you where they want you.

I can connect you with a Toronto AD if you are interested that will be able to beat 15%. Not sure what the situation is on Canadian sales tax any more - I was advised by someone last year that it was no longer refundable, but not sure if that's correct.

I believe that you will technically be faced with a VAT charge when you return to the UK, and let's not discuss ways to avoid that.

Importing to UK was 23% when VAT was 17.5% so likely 27% now.

You should be able to get a discount over here (UK) just not as much as in the States.

At that price range, you might just want to ask him what he wants. It would be a tragedy to spend thousands on a watch only to have it be the one model he doesn't like.

You are probably better off buying here in the UK.
Give Andrew Michaels or Banks Lyon a call, they are both sponsors of this forum and will most likely be able to beat 15%.

Also, since it is a birthday present, if you have any issues with it, or if your hubby doesn't like it and wants to exchange it for something else, it would be much easier to deal with if you bought in the UK.

Hi all

Well recently when i was considering importing a watch from a non EU country i actually phoned Customs to check on the costs involved and to my surprise was told their is no VAT charged on importing a watch to the UK but that there is 20% Import duty on the total cost of the watch, shipping and Insurance. Its quite easy to find the contact number for Customs via the Internet and possibly best to check the facts for yourself would be my advice.
