For second I thought this was a reenactment of Col. Kurtz's scenes from the end of Apocalypse Now.

The horror. The horror. The horror...

I think if he knew where his stolen ones were he would have them back by now and the person who stole them would have been justly rewarded.

Well, Plato spoke Greek not Latin. If you quote him in Greek I could translate it. :)

I suspect Plato being a Greek scolar also spoke Latin which is why the quote is indeed in Latin.

However I hope our Bablefish chumbs have done the work that others could not. I am ashamed to say that as an Englishman I do not really speak other languages more shout...

The most probable translation:

που προσέχει τους φυλάξει

It should translate as 'Who watches the watchmen' (or who guards the guardsmen) the pivital point in the classic graphic novel 'Watchmen' (now a film) almost.

;_)

Thanks for the effort Al.

Actually, Plato was a Greek scholar who died in 347BC which was long before Latin was spoken in Ancient Rome, if I'm not mistaken, some 200 years later in fact.

Ahh then we have some modern Roman to blame....;_)

I bow to your greater knowledge. How was the Greek translation from Bablefish?

Not very precise I'm afraid but much better than my Latin. It gave me the general idea though.

Thanks again Alan.

Well, Alan the thought kept coming back in my mind, so I did some research.

Actually, your quote is by the Roman poet Juvenal and not by Plato. That should explain why it is in Latin.

The essential problem posed by this phrase was, however, was first used by Plato in his major work The Republic.

Thought you'd like to know.
