Hey guys!
So there is someone selling their New Pluton 3100 Ref A51037. I will attach pictures with the post so you can see the condition. He is looking for $400 and I MIGHT be able to bring it down to $300. He recently got it serviced. So here are my questions:
1) Does this watch seem to be in bad condition cosmetically in a way that it can't be made to look nice again with polishing and a new glass? And if its possible, how much could all that potentially cost?
2) The strap on this is terrible. I can't afford a new original strap right now. Are there any nice knockoff ling straps for cheap available? (Metal)
3) Does replacing the glass lower the value of the watch?
4) Would this be a watch worth buying if I intend to get it done up and use? Like what are the chances that the watch can fail and I would have to shell out lots of $$ to get parts replaced? I know this is a tough question to answer since it will depend on what goes wrong, but if someone can maybe give me a vague idea?

Also the watch comes with nothing else. Just the watch.

Thanks a ton!

I think you want a different Forum - discussion on fakes/replicas/knock offs isn't generally encouraged, except for getting the scammers who sell them reported and/or neutered...

Well first off let's help with the pictures:

The problem with all of these early quartz watches is that the movement is obsolete - you can't get new ones anymore. That means that if the movement fails your only option is to find a donor watch and replace the movement. That can be done and they come up on eBay fairly often (it doesn't have to be a Breitling, there are several brands that used the same movement), but the replacement movement will be just as old and could fail the day after you get it. Sooner or later all of these early pieces are going to be paperweights.

Replacing the crystal won't hurt the value and the watch doesn't look to be in horrible cosmetic condition. I'm not sure if Breitling will do the work to restore it as they don't support the movement anymore and I would be guessing how much would be charged if they did.

Thanks for the quick reply!

So basically there really wouldn't be much of a point in picking up this watch right now and trying to get it looking good? I was more interested in getting myself a Chronomat but those are way out of my price range now and I just wanted a cheapish Breitling to quench my thirst until I can save up to get myself the Chronomat :P Which is why I'm trying to find one for around $400. Maybe this isn't such a good idea. And I did not intend to have Breitling replace the glass since they would probably charge a lot. I heard that watch shops in the area replace the glass for a lot cheaper. That was what I planed to do. Also it looks like this watch has a lot of brownish stuff on the back etc. Is this rust?? Would I be able to get this cleaned to look nice and shiny again?

I think it's just dirt.

If you have someone local do the work then expect to never be able to send the watch back to Breitling for work in the future, but I guess that's not that big a deal if they can't work on the movement anyway.

The watch may run for another 20 years, or it could break tomorrow, there's no way of knowing, but I'm a bit confused - if you don't really want it, why spend the money?? Save up for the one you do want rather than settling for something else.

Well because the one I do want costs close to $2000 just used. There is no way I can afford that in the near future and I saw this one for sale and figured that if it was a good deal for around $300 I would pick it up because I think its looks quite nice. Later when I can actually afford to buy a NEW chronomat, I'll buy one then. I just wanted to make sure that this was a really cheap price for the watch considering the condition its in. So would $300 be a nice deal for this if I manage to get him to lower his price?

Again thanks for the input I really appreciate the help!

OK, so you like a Chronomat. There are a lot of older chronomats or similar pieces available for less than $2,000.

Case in point - and this is dealer asking price - http://www.chrono24.com/en/breitling/ch ... ultIndex=0

I know that's a lot more than $300, but it's also a lot less than $2,000.

It's a different look, but this is cheaper still - http://www.chrono24.com/en/breitling/ae ... ultIndex=0

Is $300 a good price for this piece - sure, but it could still die tomorrow and be non repairable, and you just don't sound to me as though it's what you really want.

You are right lol I don't really want that watch... I just wanted a ling to tide me over until I could afford the one I really wanted! So new update. Until now I've only seen these watches at the store and on the internet and had not tried them on. Today I actually went to the store to try them on. Turns out I don't like the Chronomat since its HUGE! My wrists are kinda small and the chronomats are fat and VERY heavy compared to what I have now. I found the Colt though which IMO looks really cool and similar ish to the chronomat and its nice and thin and not so heavy!! Surprisingly, the price was really good too! I just didn't like the white in the blue face though. I wish the entire thing was just blue. I have to now decide what color I want. Is there a place I can look at ALL the current models of the Colt (including ones with and without the chronograph and automatic & quartz?) I would much rather have an automatic, but I don't want it to be much heavier than the quartz. Do you happen to know what the difference in weights would be?
thanks!

Have a look at the "My Breitling Made To Measure" on the official site.

http://www.breitling.com/en/index.php#/models/aeromarine/chrono-colt/

You can see all case/dial/strap options here.

Weights are in the Technical Data and are for the watch head, without a strap or bracelet.

Thanks for that! Ok so I think the Black with the steel strap looks amazing... Is the black the one that starts to look blue in some light?? That would be awesome! I just measured my wrist to 6" so it is really thin... I think this watch would be prefect!

If I was to buy this in black with the steel strap, what is the lowest I could possibly buy it for in USD here in the USA? Also what would the price of this used but in excellent condition end up being?

Cheers guys you are all SO helpful!! Thanks for your patience!

Oops the chrono colt. I assume its the one listed as chrono colt II? (with the three smaller dials on the face) quartz black face with stell strap. Looks like its about $2500 brand new. What is the US discount mean?? I saw the watch today in Tourneau for like $3000

Here is my suggestion: brand new Breitling Colt Quartz

I think the dimensions of the watch will fit your wrist size, the watch is gorgeous, and you might be able to fit it in your budget. Here is the link to one that sold on here for $900 with some very nice pics

The Colt is a gorgeous Breitling and just a gorgeous watch. I think it will meet your expectations :lingsrock:

Yep I've made up my mind about the colt! I looks close enough to the Chronomat which was what I originally wanted, and its smaller and lighter which is perfect for my wrist! This is the one I want though, or maybe an older variant. Black face and steel strap:
