Tax.

:yeahthat

As at Jan 2011, of the circa £1.30 it costs per litre, 59p is fuel duty, and 20% of the total (in other words 26p) is VAT.

So 85p of every £1.30 we spend on a litre of petrol is tax. Or put another way, just over 65% of the cost of every litre we buy goes straight into the government coffers for them to waste, sorry I mean "to wisely spend", on whatever <ahem> "worthy cause" they see fit.

you know i totally get the fact that we all need to pay taxes. but i cant help but to feel a little burnt by the current system. Our taxes in Canada may not be as bad as the UK but its still pretty hefty.

Just thought I'd let you all know, I think my daliance with deisel is likely to be EXTREMELY short-lived. I've had my 320d M-Sport for precisely two days, and I'm already hating it! Apart from the general lack of grunt, I'm not a fan of the low revs driving characteristics. I also hate the chugging at start-up and stopping. Yes, yes, I know you have to expect this from a diesel, but a 15 min test drive isn't really the same as driving to London and back. It sounds so like a tractor I have to keep checking in the rear-view mirror to make sure no-ones hooked up a plough to the bumper!

I give it no more than 6 months. If I could sell it tomorrow I would, but if I did it'd be the same as throwing several thousand down the drain given that the part-ex won't be anywhere near what I paid. I'm already counting the days to getting back into a petrol car. Yes, it'll cost more in fuel ecomony but at the moment I don't care. I want to enjoying driving again, and I want my 5 series back!

Damn Driver sorry to hear that! I wouldnt have thought that BMW would put out a car that drives like that. I remember driving a friends S class diesel and it was no where as bad as you describe. Maybe its a matter of mentality, hopefully you will get used to it during these six months.

I think you're right to certain extent as there's a lot to do with perception, and it's certainly all relative when I'm comparing to what I've owned and driven before. If I was moving from an original Mini for example to this, I'd no doubt think it was the best car in the world, but unfortunately I've moved down from something that was just simply better in every single aspect (except economy of course!).

We'll see how it goes. :?

PS - Yes thanks Roff. There's no similarity there at all................ mine's a different colour!

I'm very sorry for your beloved 550i D8. I was really surprised when I started reading your post.

I did not have the time to visit BS since Jan 13, so obviously I missed some threads but I instantly knew that your choice was not a good idea. Nothing wrong with downgrading of course, especially if you do not want to be the one diminishing Britain's deficit. But I thought downgrading from a V8 to a 4 cylinder and a diesel at that, he will regret it very soon.

Then I read your other thread and I understood that, unfortunately, I was right. You do know of course that nothing will replace your 550i, so I wish you luck in finding what will suit you best.

Some years ago I also had to downgrade from the 6-cylinder 320 to the 4-cylinder 318i. Needless to say I only kept it 2 months before going back to the 320. And you know how much less difference there is between my case and yours.

So, I wholeheartedly wish you to find what you're looking for. I just hope that you'll stay in the family.
