I just wanted to share some big news in my life- I've been accepted into the MBA program at the University of Cambridge! This is something I've wanted to do for a few years now and I couldn't be happier that Cambridge decided I'm a good fit for their program. I currently work in biotech and would like to stay in this field post-MBA, and as Cambridge is one of the biggest the technology hubs in Europe, it seemed like a perfect match. Post-MBA I'd like to work for a VC company.

In any case, this post wasn't entirely about my vanity, but was more about getting some input from anyone on the forum who has attended Cambridge. Any ideas on which colleges are the best? Some don't accept MBA's (like King's College), but most are open to me. Also, I have two children (ages 14 and 10) that will need to be put into school, so if someone could comment on public vs private, I'd appreciate it.

If anyone has general opinions on how to make a move like this easier, please do share. I've never moved this far in my life and am a little overwhelmed by the idea. I did spend some time in Cambridge earlier this week and absolutely fell in love with the place. I visited Oxford as well, but liked Cambridge significantly more . . . thankfully.

My fiance and I spent some time in both Cambridge and London this past week and we were absolutely appalled at how expensive everything was. All of the prices were the same numerical value as in the US, but naturally, the prices were in GBPs, which made everything 60% more money than the US. I don't know how people survive over there! Come to think of it, I'm not sure how I will . . .

We did that too . It cost me nearly $70 USD for 8 gallons of gas. Absolutely unreal. Thankfully I won't need a car in Cambridge.

Congratulations indeed, that's a real achievement

Don't know much about Cambridge (I wasn't that smart ) but have some experience with international moves - albeit back in 97.

This might sound strange, but if you are planning to take wooden furniture the biggest thing to remember with Europe vs. North America is the climate. North America has a largely continental climate that tends to be dryer than the maritime climate of Europe so wooden furniture can swell and warp when you go East - talk to an expert and they can ensure that it's sealed well enough.

For shipping other stuff, items that you don't need immediately can be shipped as part of an LTL container load (i.e. a share of a shipping container) and save you a fortune. The only problem that we had was that they calculate costs by volume rather than weight, and don't always give credit for air (i.e. tables can be expensive because the dimensions are big albeit that most of it is empty space).

There were a bunch of helpful online tools when we came across that would compare living costs in different parts of the world in 'real' terms - how long you would have to work to earn enough money to buy x items for example - it's usually based around a weekly grocery. That might not be directly relevant as a student, but will give you some idea of the costs and how much you could offset that by working part time or if your wife is going to be working.

This info is helpful. I've worked in supply chain for the past 5 years, so I am more familiar than I care to be with shipping. I was planning on shipping a bunch of stuff via an LTL container, so hearing this from you helps me to confirm this is the right choice. I'm going to try and find a furnished house to hopefully avoid shipping furniture. Thanks for the online tool calculator idea. I'll google around and see what I can drum up.

Can't give you any advise about removals but I'd like to offer a few words about how to enjoy your time here.

"Two countries divided by a common language" as Shaw said. And it's true! Our chips are not the same as your chips etc and be careful with words like fag and fanny! Even within Britain, there are significant differences between areas.
