As some of you may know, in parallel with SIHH a group of independent watchmakers are showing at the Geneva Time Exhibition or GTE. This is only the second year for the show and it is twice as big as last year.

Many of these manufacturers only produce a few watches per year, so prices reflect that, but there are some more affordable watches. What you do find with the independents is a lot more freedom to push the envelope. Already I have seen a few 'love to own' pieces. Here are a couple of early ones:

Ladoire Geneve Mr. Green - the first in the Black Widow collection with three more models due by Basel. It's an LE of 12 for just under CHF 70,000

One of the better known brands at GTE is Urwerk. This is the UR 110 Torpedo (video link):

Think the service indicator they put on it is excellent - but curious how it works. It's either got to be battery driven (which I doubt) and just tick down with time, or somehow actually connected to measure the oils.

If it's like they have done before it's simply a five year calendar - it assumes fixed service intervals.

But if it's just a calendar coupled to the spring, doesn't that need the watch to be constantly wound at all times to show the 5 years properly? Otherwise the countdown towards service stops if the watch isn't running (but that won't stop the oils from breaking down)? That's why I thought of a separate power source for the indicator.

Correct - it's not a perfect science, and will not take oil aging into account.
