Newbie here. Last year I was in the market for a World Navitimer and about to pull the trigger when my lady informed me that I must have already pulled the trigger because she was pregnant Long story short, the watch purchase was placed on hold...... I'm back. Today I spoke with a AD about a World Navitimer with a Crock Band for 4600 (Cash, out the door) My question, and I understand it's subjective, is this a fair price? I'd like to start a collection and I want to get off on the right foot and not do dumb (Like I do with cars) Thanks for any advice in advance,

Based on the Breitling Source price list, your AD is discounting a little over 20% from standard retail. A really great discount is between 25 - 30%, but if you like the watch, like the dealer, and like the fact you can walk out of the store with it, that's worth something too. At the very least, I would say you are being offered a fair price, and are not getting taken for a ride. This presupposes the watch is new, and sold with all papers, packaging, and the Breitling warranty.

That's a 22% discount - on the low end of OK in the States. You could do better than that and save sales tax by contacting a couple members here with contacts to a couple ADs. Depending on your sales tax, you could expect to save over 10% more.

Oh right...sales tax. Is Oregon the only state in the U.S. that doesn't have it? I just take for granted it's not a factor, but obviously it is...a big factor if your state has it and you're buying locally.

Get ready for an education - here in Phoenix the sales tax is ... Drum role... 9.93%!

Delaware also is sales tax free.

Yeah, that will make a nice dent in that discount, won't it? I used to live in California, so I'm not completely foreign to sales tax. It's just that one very quickly adjusts to seeing the price at the register be the same as what's on the price tag.

But I digress...back to our regularly scheduled topic.

Thanks guys for the input, here in LA, Cali the sales tax is high as well 8 1/2 9% something like that. So a good discount is 25-30 and my AD is offering 22% I'll go back and try to get another 5% but I want to be fair as everyone need to make a living....another question since we're ordering this one would it be considered a 2010 or 11 or does it even matter? I noticed on the Navitimes the sub dials are set at 9, 6 and 3, and the World Navitimer are set at 6,9, 12, is that correct?

PS. that 4600 included sales tax. Does that change your view of the 22% discount?

It could have been made in the last 5 years - it's not like buying a car in that regard. Likely made in the last couple years. You can date the manufacture by the code on the case between the bottom (6:00) lugs. The first 2 numbers are the week and the last 2 the year. “1208” would be the 12th week of 2008.

And yes you are correct about the sub dial layout. The World is based on the Valjoux 7754 and the regular Navi on the 7753.

I'd say that's a pretty nice deal, considering the dealer is on the hook for tax. You could probably still save more going with an out-of-state AD who will offer you a bigger discount, but those dealers can afford to offer you more off the price, since they won't be required to pay the tax on the sale. Your AD probably wouldn't be able to compete, or if he can, he'd be feeling the squeeze more than the others. If I were in your shoes, I'd go for it with your current dealer. It's still a good price, and if you ever have problems with the watch, it's nice to be able to take it in to someone, rather than having to ship it off to parts unseen, if not unknown.

Having the AD a few miles away is worth some amount of $$ to me as well - how much seems to be a moving target.

Sorry to hijack your thread for a sec, daddyswatch (I'm assuming, given the context, that's daddy's watch, not daddy swatch? :p) but this raises a question:

Can't you bring your watch to any AD for service/overview even if it wasn't purchased there, or am I living in some sort of magical fantasy on that one?

It depends - not all ADs have Bretiling certified watch servicers and the AD you bought it from my do more on the cheap for you. Any warranty work should go to the Service Center to avoid vitiating the warranty. For watches out of warranty, I don't care if the local guy simply regulates and lubricates. But for a full service, it's off to the service center for me - what they do there is awesome and you get a "brand new" watch.
