Gas grill that is. I'm thinking about buying a charcoal Weber because I love the taste of burgers and steaks on a charcoal grill...what do you guys prefer? Charcoal or Gas?

Charcoal every day of the week.

I've used a Cajun Grill for years (www.cajungrill.com) for both grilling and smoking / barbecue and have been very pleased with it. There are plenty of good grills, just don't go cheap - make sure that you get a thick gauge of steel and a quality heat proof finish. Also make sure that you use good quality lump charcoal rather than briquettes.

Whoa that's a serious grill!! And you can get a smoke box with it to smoke ribs on the grill...mmmmm. That's what I'm looking for!! I want to smoke ribs and chicken etc. I prefer the taste of meat that is cooked on a charcoal grill, there's no comparison!!

What is lump charcoal? I have never heard of that. I've been using a natural gas grill since I've been a homeowner so I'm clueless about charcoal and charcoal grills.

You don't need the smoke box unless you are smoking a huge amount of meat - just set the charcoal on one side of the grill and the meat on the other (there are two separate grill racks) - I've done 22 hour smokes on 14+ lb briskets without the smoke box - just use the height adjustment and vents to control the temperature. It is worth getting the rotisserie - electric and great for whole birds.

In terms of lump charcoal - well, charcoal is produced by burning wood without oxygen resulting in charcoal that is still in the same form that it was before - bits of wood. Lump charcoal is that wood broken into lumps so that it still looks like wood as opposed to charcoal briquettes which are processed and pressed into mini bricks with filler and stuff.

Also, spend $15 and buy a charcoal chimney (google will know) - very easy way of starting charcoal without firelighters / fluid.

Great info about how to smoke without a smoke box. Can you get lump charcoal in different 'flavor' wood? Apple wood, oak wood etc? I bet the lump charcoal gives the meat a better flavor than the standard black charcoal...right?

Charcoal chimney and rotisserie are both a must from everything I've heard.

Charcoal is indeed the way to go for flavor if you are not too concerned about potential carcinogens (hate to be a party pooper). :)

If you are looking for something that you won't be replacing in a few years (and perhaps never) then this is the grill you need. It's constructed of aluminum and it will literally last you a lifetime.

I have, and continue to use on a regular basis, the one my father bought almost 45 years ago. Yes- that's 45years and the only repair has been the occasional need to replace the grills and one wheel once. It has vents for perfect control of the cooking and the aluminum heats evenly.

I could not recommend one any higher.

Charcoal is without a doubt gonna give you better tasting meat IMO.

BUT the problem I personally have with it is the time it takes to get the grill ready....
Sometimes you just want to grill up a couple quick steaks or burgers and charcoal just takes too long.

I picked this beast up in the summer... I don't think I will ever buy a bbq that is not a Weber again.

Hi!

I have both gas and charcoal. I prefere tha gas for meat like game. Which i think has a unique taste, just enhanced by the grilling prosess. But to steaks, chicken and fish.. No doubt: charcoal!
Enjoy grilling!

So many references about the taste of meat, so little time. God I'm retarded. Anyway, I have a gas grill and I like it if I want to just grill something quick, but I need to get a charcoal grill for steaks, no better way to grill a steak than with either charcoal or wood. I'm actually thinking of building a fire-pit in my backyard for just that reason, plus I like fire

Definitely Charcoal for me.

The disadvantage of the wait time is totally worth the better taste of the coal.

I am a Weber fan for the last 20 years now and I have three different BBQs depending on the occasion:

The Smokey Joe for a quick BBQ or BBQ by the lake, the 22-inch One-Touch Silver for family BBQs at home and the 26-inch One-Touch Gold for parties.

Thorough (and immediate after use) cleaning of the grills and BBQ is of course essential not only for the longevity of the equipment but also facilitates future use. It goes without saying that mine are kept in a pristine condition.

I was looking at the Weber One Touch Gold, the 22.5 inch. Can you smoke ribs in yours? I really want to be able to slow smoke ribs etc.

Never tried it but I guess you can.

You would have to use the indirect method with Hickory wood chips (http://store.weber.com/Items/Accessorie ... x?pid=1169) or Mesquite wood chips (http://store.weber.com/Items/Accessorie ... x?pid=1168) in the char baskets on each side and the ribs right in the middle of the grill.
