Get a Tag, you will get years of enjoyment out of it, and get a girlfriend, and quit worrying about nice watches.

As many of you know, I am a high school student (just turned 16 a couple weeks ago). I've been on this forum for....2 years now? I'm not sure. This entire time, though, I've been talking about getting a watch. First it was a breitling, then it was longines, then it was this, then that.... The truth is, I love watches but I would want a quality watch. Thanks to this forum, I've learned so much about the ins and outs of watches. Unfortunately, this forum also made me want the best of the best! I view watches not only on the outside but also what's on the inside. I am obsessed with owning a watch with an in-house movement, I really don't want a watch without one. Unfortunately, it costs more to get an in-house movement.

I just wanted your opinions on this:

I am 16 and I want to start my collection with a 10k watch. When I get it, I'll probably be 18 or 19, so thinking relatively long term for my age. I found this internship that pays around 1.5k a year for 200 hours of work (I'm only in high school, so that's freaking awesome!). What I mean by 10k watch is retail price, so I could probably get it down to 8k maybe more if I'm lucky and my dad helps me haggle. I cut a deal with my parents that they would pay 1/5 of the price of the watch assuming I could earn the rest, 4/5. This is definitely something I would want to work towards, so I could set my head into it and get the needed $$. Assuming everything were to work out, 2-3 years later, I have the money to purchase the watch. Do you guys think it'd be absurd for me, at around age 18-19 (maybe graduation gift? IDK) to purchase my FIRST watch that retails around 10k? I am so in love with watches but I really want one that I wouldn;t ever regret paying the money for. Yes, I could probably get a longines watch or something like baume & mercier for loads cheaper, but I feel like I wouldn;t be happy with the purchase. I don't want a watch for the sake of having a watch, I want a watch because I appreciate the build quality and appearance, and that comes at a hefty price. I am, undoubtedly, going to start a watch collection whether it's when I am 18 or 50. It's something I have a passion for, but is it the wrong time to start now?

I was looking into the GP small seconds WWTC, just if you were wondering. It's a watch that has everything I look for.

Thanks,
crasian1030

 Let me explain something to you there buddy... YOUR 16 probably a Sophmore in High School(am I right?) A 10k watch whether you can afford it or not is stupid for someone your age. IF ANYTHING get a Tag to start at that age.

I'll never forget this...I bought my Ex from HS a Gucci watch for $700. Within a week IT WAS STOLEN while it was locked in her locker during gym class. When people find out about your 10K (or even a $1000 watch) you will be the one who loses because it can and will be stolen. People are jealous my friend and I was the same as you.... I love nice things(especially LINGS lol)! Whether you can afford or not....DOESN'T MATTER! There is a time and place for everything and HS is NOT the time!

Now, say you wait till college...(another scenario) That would be better but don't take it off your wrist EVER. One drunk night is ALL is going to take. People rob college students places all the time on the weekends! Why? Because while everyone is passed out drunk I bet 90% of ALL apartment doors are left open. People then walk in and rob the place without anyone flinching a muscle.

I got mine first as a college graduation present LITERALLY the last day of my college career and I am so happy I waited.

I'm sure you may be a stubborn as me (or I was) saying NOTHING WILL HAPPEN. BUT, my money says IT CAN AND IT WILL! Once again people like what they can't have and will do anything to get it. The worlds a $hitty place dude.

On the other hand, if you do get it GOOD LUCK and wear in good health. And when something does happen to it... don't post your sob story here because it may cause for some laughing and I TOLD YOU SO's.

Best of luck and let us know how you make out!

Drinking at college? They still do that?

10k watch at your age... no, it's not absurd, it's ridiculous.
It remind me my youth when I decided to save money to buy a Gibson Les Paul Custom and I ended buying a Les Paul Studio (and sold it a year later)
Like most people thought and said. Buy a nice watch, a 2k or 3k watch (for special occasions). Save money for a car. And spend the rest to enjoy you're life with your friends and girls.
I'm sure you'll regret if you buy a 10k watch as I would have regretted if I bought the Les Paul Custom.

And the funny thing is I Personally (JMO) would never give a 16 year old a compliment on his or her 10k watch because I would either think it is a) fake, or b) undeserving.

I could care less if you went to school in Beverly Hills or Philadelphia/Rich or poor. I would make fun of you for wearing a 10k watch at that age.

Sorry JMO

Get a Tag, it will FIT YOU much better and I'd compliment you! :D PS. Even that is pushing it for a 16 year old.

You know, I have to say..............

I know that the OP described the idea as 'absurd' himself, and my comment in response to his question was encouraging of 'sober second thoughts', but whenever we have topics along the lines of 'Why did you buy x watch' the prevailing sentiment is that we always buy them for ourselves and we don't care what other people think. I encourage the OP to retain the same mindset, both now and when he has the money to make the decision.

Certainly take the advice, some of it extremely significant (sharkman), but don't make a decision based on what other people might think about you if you wear a $10k watch.

Not intended to be a comment on anyone else's post, just an observation.

If you can spend 10k on a watch at 16 (or 18 or 19 even), you better have one hell of a nice car to match along with a mortgage. If not, not only is it pathetic but I find it hilarious.

Once again....Buy a Tag and like someone else said take a crazy Vacation and spend it all on T&A :uplaugh:

It would be like myself (25 years old) driving a Phantom. Whether I can afford it or not, DOESN'T MATTER! People will see a 25 year old walking out and automatically judge me. The same as a 16 year old or even a 19 year old wearing a 10K watch.

Now if I was a 50 year old driving a Phantom, thats a different story and will most likely come off as more deserving.

To all your comments Mrcheatle:

Yes, I do play a sport: tennis. It's all I play and rackets last me around 2-3 years, so its not a big cost at all. I just practice with my dad so that's free. The only other costs would be high school team costs and tournaments, which is still much less than other sports such as football and golf. I completely agree with you on the quote (above). It wouldn't make sense and it would seem as though I'm such rich spoiled kid who didn't deserve the watch one bit. First off, the only people I'd really tell about the purchase (if they asked) would be my closest friends. The brands I have an interest in are brands that aren't known to kids my age, and I highly doubt many would have the curiosity to look up. Also, I wouldn't tell people how much I paid for it because I would have it for my enjoyment only (there is no purpose in wasting away 10k to show off to people, I could use that 10k for sooooo many other things). The safety issue I mentioned earlier. I have thought of that and my sister has told me so many times about that, and I AM AWARE. But based on keeping it off the radar as best as possible, that probably wouldn't be a big issue (it would stay on my wrist all the time, trust me). As for my parents, I told them about getting a 1k watch 2-3 years ago, they flipped. 2-3 years later? They are very aware of my passion for watches and they tell me that if I can earn the money it's up to me whether I want to get it or not. Basically sharkman's story but without the cash up front.

I am not some spoiled rich kid, and that should be apparent because I'd already have the watch now if I was. I want to emphasize again, watches are a passion of MINE, not my friends, or peers at school. I would purchase a watch for my enjoyment only. Like I said, I'd get a Rolex if I was interested in making a statement.

It sounds like you have your head on pretty straight and it is your decision. As I, and many others have said, possibly lowering your standards may be an overall better plan. I do think MrCheatle has overstepped his bounds a bit on some of his harsher criticism, especially only being 25 himself, and not an older mature 50 something year old that has worked for years and years to "earn" something like a nice watch. Take it easy on the kid, he has a passion, which I respect, and is clearly more tuned into finer things than most 16 year olds.

Understood and I applaud your interest in watches, I think that is great! . BUT just to reemphasize this point... Kids are jealous (even people you THINK are your friends) and like what they can't have.

Trust me!, I received a ride to college for basketball and drove a car that a 17 shouldn't be driving. I know what it's like!

Even though you have a passion for something there is still a right and wrong time to do things.

I'll leave my thoughts at that, as I think I have said enough here :D Good luck with your discussion.

Just my .02 but I would never not buy something because people would judge me. If I wanted a phantom at 25 and could afford it, you can bet your ass I would be in that pantom. Who cares what other people think, living your life by how others perceive you is no way to live life at all.

Just one more thing I have to tell. I don't know where you live, but I think that the "where" doesn't matter.
If u care of your family, buy a nice watch but not that expensive. What would happen if someone kidnaps you to get money thinking that you are a rich boy?
How would your family feel if that person kills you because he don't believe that your family doesn't have a millon dollars when their 16 or 17 years old son is wearing a 10k watch?
It's up to you.
That's one of the many reasons why I'm now using a g-shock.
I remember how scared was a friend of mine when we were going home after dinner and some stupid guy stopped us in front of my car and point me with a gun.
Luckily my car is automatic and I was stepping on the brake, so when I saw the gun pointed at me I accelerated to kill that motherf**ker and unfortunately that MF was saved by a few inches.

I love how everyone tries to force their opinions on others...just chill out people. You obviously are a bright young adult; do what is in your best interest. You'll get a ton of people telling you to save your money, buy a cheaper watch, invest in stocks or real esate etc....but who cares what we all think....do what you feel is right and what will make you happy.

If you want to work hard and save for an expensive timepiece then more power to you, you'll probably cherish it forever and it will teach you a great life lesson.....that the harder you work ANYTHING is possible.

Good luck either way.

That's pretty shallow; making fun of others for your own personal enjoyment is pathetic. Who are you to tell him that a tag will FIT HIM??

Well, you're younger than me, and at 18, you'll be younger than I was when I got my first nice watch. Therefore you don't deserve to get a nice watch and it's absurd...even if you work hard and save up for it. (Extreme sarcasm)

If you have the discipline to save up for something of artistic value for a period of years, then you deserve it. The fact that you're even considering this plan speaks well for your maturity and ability to plan. If you actually pull this off, I will be impressed, not so much about the watch, but that you were able to set a goal and maintain the self-discipline to achieve it.
