Off Topic....But how is an internship that pays $1500/year for 200 hours of work awesome??? That's $7.50/hour...you can make that flipping burgers at the local golden arches...would you like fries with that .....Breitling. Or working the front door at the local Big Box Store..

Yes...I understand that sometimes you work for free in an internship to gain 'business experience' but I think that's a major crock of crap and should be in violation of labor laws...but unfortunately it isn't.

Back on topic...do what you want, it's your money, make yourself happy. You're mature enough to know what's right and wrong...i think deep down you already know the correct answer judging by your choice of words for the title of your thread.

That's definitely something I have thought about. Right now, my goal is to get that watch, and by the time I earn that money, I will probably realize how much money 10k is (not that I think 10k is nothing). The truth is that I'll probably end up keeping that money and hold off on the watch.

The difference is that it would be something I would be interested in. I'd much rather be doing that than flipping burgers and getting no real office experience.


I really appreciate everyone's opinion on this idea of mine. All in all, this is really something I should be thinking about AFTER I earn the money. But when that time comes, I will definitely be changed in some way, for better or for worse, and that's when I can make the final decision (this is just an idea). Once again, I am glad I stayed on this forum for so long because I've learned so much and the community here is really fantastic. Thanks everyone for your input!

I am a tad confused if you are going to make 1.5k a year then that's say 6k in 4 years which is still short of a 10k watch, but won't you have any expenses? Going out? Transport? Rent?
I agree that getting a cheaper watch would make more sense but it's your money and your choice at the end of the day.

First off, this internship would only be for one year, so it would only be an initial 1.5k. And what I meant by I'd set my head out to get what I wanted is that I would probably do a lot of jobs just around the neighborhood such as shoveling snow, raking leaves, etc (typical teenager work). Anyways, after hearing all the opinions, it doesn't matter much anymore that I get 10k, it's just that I get as much money I can without hurting my schoolwork before I lose this free time I have to be able to pursue such an ambition. Also, by 10k, that is retail price. Obviously you can haggle and get that down. Plus, if I really can't hold off on the purchase, I'd probably get a secondhand one, so loads cheaper.

Boy do I feel OLD! When I was 16 (a long time ago in a galexy far,far away)I wanted the best and newest tennis racket made - the Head Arthur Ashe Graphite Composite. First like it. I could think of nothing else. It was...................$100 - outrageous then for a piece of sporting goods. I asked for it for my birthday. I visited the sporting goods store 3 times a week. I was certain I would get it. My Dad, a practical sort, handed me an envelope on my birthday. I couldn't believe it wasn't that gorgeous racket. Inside the envelope - 100 one dollar bills. My Dad said "Now sit down one the floor and count them out one bill at a time in piles of 10." I did and he told me it was my money, get what I wanted, but he hoped I realized just how much dough it was.

I wish I could say I saved the $$ - I didn't. Went right to the store and bought that racket. But I knew it would disappoint my Dad. He never said a word. Never gave a harsh look. But I knew. And I never really could enjoy that racket because of it.

I'm grateful I had a wise old man. FWIW

It's your choice but I'm 27 and I wish I'd done things differently when I was younger. My thing back then (even until recently) was cars. Second hand cars around the same sort of prices you're thinking for your watch but I've lost thousands.

My advice? If you save 10k, spend a fraction of it. Don't be bothered about the best of the best for now... just get a nice watch but then use the rest of the money you save towards a deposit on a house or something similar in the future.

You'll lose a lot of money on an expensive watch; that is pretty much guaranteed. PLUS although it's nice to own these expensive things, have you ever actually worn something like that and then gone out of the house? Most of the time it's fine but there'll always be that time you'll end up somewhere you didn't want to when wearing a several thousand dollar watch.

To sum up, the expensive things in life are nice but only if you can truly afford them and there aren't any other priorities in your life. Get yourself a nice but cheaper watch, enjoy some of the remainder and then save the rest.

This is definitely something I would want to work towards, so I could set my head into it and get the needed $$. Assuming everything were to work out, 2-3 years later, I have the money to purchase the watch. Do you guys think it'd be absurd for me, at around age 18-19 (maybe graduation gift? IDK) to purchase my FIRST watch that retails around 10k? I am so in love with watches but I really want one that I wouldn;t ever regret paying the money for. Yes, I could probably get a longines watch or something like baume & mercier for loads cheaper, but I feel like I wouldn;t be happy with the purchase. I don't want a watch for the sake of having a watch, I want a watch because I appreciate the build quality and appearance, and that comes at a hefty price. I am, undoubtedly, going to start a watch collection whether it's when I am 18 or 50. It's something I have a passion for, but is it the wrong time to start now?

I was looking into the GP small seconds WWTC, just if you were wondering. It's a watch that has everything I look for.

Dude, do what feels right for you. At the end of the day it will be your decision and you will live with the consequences. If you take the right decision for you then you will be happy as a result. If you just settle with something that doesn't fulfill you then the result will be regret and as we all know, regret is a waste of time...(who knows what tomorrow brings, winning the lottery or might get hit by a bus...)

If I were you, I would get something more affordable. I agree with the rest of the folks here. There are exceptional time pieces under $5000, under $4000, under $3000, you get my drift. Plus, leave that $10k watch as something to look for and strive for for the future...when you get it then, you'll enjoy it that much more.

If I was your age, with that amount of money, I would spend it on a trip around the world. Visit amazing historical cities and different cultures. Have a few bevies with the locals :drunk: and discover the world. Memories and takeaways to last you a lifetime something that a material thing can seldom bring.

But I digress 8) there is no right/wrong decision.Ultimately you decide and you have to do what makes you happy. Its good at least that you asked all of us to get different views in order to make a more informed decision...

You don't think your father got any enjoyment out of being able to afford you something that you really really wanted?

Did you sell the racket a few weeks later on tennisracketsource.com and upgrade to a better one? :poke:

Again, thanks for all the input, especially this story of yours sharkman, very relevant to my case! I already have many regrets, but not monetary, and thus a lot less significant than wasting away 10k. I definitely don't want to spend that much money and regret it. Now, if I had the money, it'd be a very tough decision as it is something I lust for. However, maybe this time it takes me to earn however much I need will be enough time to really get me understanding of priorities and practicality. I'm glad I asked this question; input from people in the real world is much greater than my naive high school thoughts!

:shock: Let me explain something to you there buddy... YOUR 16 probably a Sophmore in High School(am I right?) A 10k watch whether you can afford it or not is stupid for someone your age. IF ANYTHING get a Tag to start at that age.

I'll never forget this...I bought my Ex from HS a Gucci watch for $700. Within a week IT WAS STOLEN while it was locked in her locker during gym class. When people find out about your 10K (or even a $1000 watch) you will be the one who loses because it can and will be stolen. People are jealous my friend and I was the same as you.... I love nice things(especially LINGS lol)! Whether you can afford or not....DOESN'T MATTER! There is a time and place for everything and HS is NOT the time!

Now, say you wait till college...(another scenario) That would be better but don't take it off your wrist EVER. One drunk night is ALL is going to take. People rob college students places all the time on the weekends! Why? Because while everyone is passed out drunk I bet 90% of ALL apartment doors are left open. People then walk in and rob the place without anyone flinching a muscle.

I got mine first as a college graduation present LITERALLY the last day of my college career and I am so happy I waited.

I'm sure you may be a stubborn as me (or I was) saying NOTHING WILL HAPPEN. BUT, my money says IT CAN AND IT WILL! Once again people like what they can't have and will do anything to get it. The worlds a $hitty place dude.

On the other hand, if you do get it GOOD LUCK and wear in good health. And when something does happen to it... don't post your sob story here because it may cause for some laughing and I TOLD YOU SO's.

Sorry to keep adding thoughts here but I can't help it.

It would be like myself (25 years old) driving a Phantom. Whether I can afford it or not, DOESN'T MATTER! People will see a 25 year old walking out and automatically judge me. The same as a 16 year old or even a 19 year old wearing a 10K watch.

Now if I was a 50 year old driving a Phantom, thats a different story and will most likely come off as more deserving.
