I'm not really brand specific. I think there are a lot of fine timepieces on the market. I'm not a fan of companies that copy each others pieces. For me, I'm a huge fan of mechanical timepieces. I really like it when watchmakers use their own movements (I'm excited about Breitling's rumored movements). I prefer chronographs and dials with luminous markers. I'm not a fan of anything with a battery. After owning mechanical watches over the last decade, I would NEVER buy a timepiece if it had a battery. I appreciate their functionality, but there's nothing like a hand made mechanical timepiece in my opinion.

going way out on a limb here, but I'm guessing buying this isn't on your Bucket List -

My first foray into luxury watches was my Chopard earlier this year, I'd never really been into watches before that. My father had a Rolex when I was little and I'd never really liked it overmuch, and most of my watch-loving friends prefer Rolex too, and even the modern ladies styles have never appealed to me, and I sort of assumed all high-end watches were the same. I did like my Chopard very much, though, and I had intended getting a Chanel j12 after that, and that would be it for me for watches, but...

A random trip into the watch shop in Gatwick Airport two months ago led me to the Breitling counter, where I fell completely in love with a model (which I now believe to be a Starliner, but may have been a Galactic 30; I can't remember enough detail to be sure) that I foolishly did not take the details of. Searching for information on this watch led me to the main Breitling website, and the more I looked, the more I liked, and the more I looked at the level of detail, design and craftsmanship that was involved, the more impressed I became. A few trips to various ADs made me take a closer look at different brands, and research here and on other websites has led me to develop quite an obsession with watch collecting. They're beautiful, practical, and while not an "investment" in the classical sense, do retain a fair bit of value if you want to sell them later.

I'm still a total noob when it comes to watches, really, and I've yet to own a mechanical watch (largely because the ones I've looked at are so very heavy and my wrists are so very small) but I find that for all of my looking, some brands definitely appeal more than others. Overall, my top three would be Breitling, JLC, and PP, since they seem to have the highest number of watches I would like to/intend to buy over the next couple of years.

i'm a bit of a brand harlot though i will admit to ulysse nardin giving me a slightly wider smile  though i will admit that some of their models give me the head creeps.
my take on in-house movements is that they confer no measurable metric of superiority to a well regulated eta movement. i have often inquired what makes them better and the responses have centered on exclusivity, and desirability, collectability but never improved ability. disregarding the emotional appeal of the in-house movement i still stand ready to be convinced provided a metric can be devised to prove their superiority:!:

No, it's the real deal. I think it was designed by Salvadore Dali, on acid.

I think the worst part is that both halves of that thing would be hideous on their own. Combined they're some sort of word I can't think of.

I would have to echo a number of other posts in regards to the reasons Breitling is at the top of my favored list. That would be for me the fact that their extensive lineup presents the broadest model appeal to me in their styling. I can't say this about other lines, but then again to be fair I haven't even begun to explore all the possibilities out there. I do like my Omega Seamaster quite a bit and would like to acquire one of their Aqua Terra's with the in-house 8500 coaxial movement with the DB. Other than that I have started to warm to a couple of Panerai's lineup and I do like several within Ulysse Nardin's lineup. IWC makes a few pieces I wouldn't mind having and I spied a diver in Glashutte Original's lineup that is appealing. In looking at the limited number of lines that I've been exposed to however; it seems that there are only a few within each brands lineup that I care for, but most of the models in Breitling's lineup appeal to me. I'm sure my collection will always tend to be Ling heavy for that reason, but I will diversify it with other brands and keep my collection at a manageable usable level. I don't want to collect a bunch of safe queens, after all a watch is a tool and meant to me used and I sure can't enjoy it hiding in a safe.
