A few months ago I was on my way to Scottsdale for a convention and I was shocked to see how many freakin cameras there were on the I-10 highway... first time seeing stuff like that...

In LA there are no traffic cameras on the freeway... well at least the ones that cite you... but then again in LA traffic speeding is nearly impossible anyway...

Hahahaha I thought you meant some kind of performance driving school. They make you go to driving school for having a ticket? Ahahahahahahaha.

Hahahahahaha....

I was driving home from downtown near midnight friday night, following a cop car doing a tad over the limit on a 3 lane per side main roadway. I was not wearing my seatbelt, sending a BBM, he pulled me over for going through the red light, though I would say it was yellow, he said it was yellow when he went through it, and I didn't have my insurance papers on me as I took them out to renew and forgot to put them back in the car.

Not even a warning.

Hahahahaha. Canada, land of the free.

Maybe Marie can make this up to you with a trip to Reno... :cheer:

And the flip side of this argument..........

Three months after someone ran a stop sign and pulled straight in front of me when we were travelling on an 80km highway, my wife is still off work, she is still having physio twice a week, still having massage twice a week, still fighting the insurance company for the legal maximum $400 per week income replacement and is still unable to do many things that she enjoyed prior to the accident.

The driver pled guilty to failure to yield (the cops wanted to charge Careless Driving but that requires proof of speeding for conviction) and paid a $165 fine and got 3 points.

Hahahahaha indeed :!:

I don't get it Roff, are you saying your wife would be fine if the driver had to take a driving school?

I've been through a similar situation with my Ex from a severe rear-ender (we figured after was all said and done 3 years later we were out $25,000) and driving school is not going to fix stupid. We ended up going our seperate ways, she won't be the same as she was before the accident, ever.

No, I'm saying that the fact that people can run red lights and have no repercussions from the police (as you stated) is not (in my opinion) a good thing.

My implication was I went through a yellow light, behind the cop who thought it might have been red, but as it was not certainly red, no ticket. Hence, presumption of innocence. Had it certainly been red, I'm sure it would be a ticket as I was already pulled over.

In AZ, a camera takes your pic, and you get a ticket and go to driving school apparently. Presumption of guilt...

Edit: Even after the ticket is issued to lawyer, who fights it in court, judge upholds camera. No justice. No justice, no freedom.

I understand your concern and truly hope your wife heals as quickly as possible.

But what my home state does by putting up red light cameras and tweeking the length of yellow lights to create impossible stop situations is the same as if there was a spring loaded stop sign set laying in the weeds until a car triggered it to pop up at a point where it would be physically impossible to stop in time.

It also creates a secondary hazard - accidents caused by vehicles suddenly slamming on the brakes when a light abruptly changes red. All of this for the sake of raising money.

Want to know how crazy it becomes? As one of our members noted, the freeways here are littered with speed enforecement cameras. If a ticket shows up in your mail, you can pay it with no points on your license. Over and over. As many times as possible. No consequences but a few bucks. Meanwhile the highway patrol has stopped speed enforcement entirely, relying soley upon the cameras. If a cop gives you a citation you get 3 points on your license. 8 points in a year (3 speeding tickets) is an automatic 3 month license suspension. If the camera nails you, you get no points.

The point being income generating traffic enforcement leaves serial violaters on the road with a valid license. Enforcement for the sake of safety, takes repeat offenders off the road. One fills the public till while the other protects innocent person who may become a victim of bad drivers.

Is there any way you can create some type of awareness about it in the general public with the local news stations or something Shark? They love this kinda story.

They had radar cameras up here for a while, some guy took them to the Supreme court apparently spending $200,000 of his own money to fight them. Along with some political pressure from the opposition, they were scrapped. I don't think many people even paid the tickets from them. I believe it was the kind of situation where you describe Shark, pure profit!

Now that sounds like fun. You can have fake deer pop out of the woods to cause traffic accidents so the cops can work more overtime. :popo:

This reminds me of an article I recently read about the brilliant folks in Canada who created 'Pavement Patty.' In an effort to stop speeding, they placed a hologram of children playing in the roadway which you can only see when you're about 100 feet away from smashing into the child. Imagine the people slamming on the brakes and thinking they just killed a child?? Absolute Insanity!! Arizona should do this...and for every Pavement Patty you hit you get a $200 ticket...like a video game.

Actually there was a class action against Red-flex (?), the company that makes, installs, and maintains these cameras. They were all supposed to be out or modified. Since I never get traffic tickets, I didn’t pay attention until after I paid this one and received a notice of intent to suspend license.

There isn’t much that can be done in Arizona. We were largely reliant on the real estate bubble and now our financial situation is tennuous and at the bottom of most states. There is a prevalent “screw the other guy, do whatever it takes” mentality now.

I don’t have a problem with enforcement cameras in general. It’s all about how they are used. If used to promote the public safety, great. If used to generate income the incentive exists to create untenable and potentially hazardous circumstances.

PS - if I had a spare $200K sitting around I likely wouldn't spend it on fighting speed cameras!! Don't want to leave the impression I'm a Don Quixote or something.

I forgot to mention the 'mobile' enforcement units that were also in effect along the highway in AZ...

basically cars with dudes aiming their radar guns at incoming traffic...

A little trivia... many of the intersection traffic cameras here in LA are actually run by firms in Arizona... they cite you and cut a piece of the pie to the city of LA...

I wonder how that Pavement patty thing went. Must have been good results in Philly, where they got the idea from, whom got the idea from Europe.

Shark, if you never get tickets, this must be your first in a while. In addition to the class, they want to take your license? Really?

No. If you get a photo red light ticket, it is automatically referred to MVD which issues an intent to suspend unless you complete the 8 hour Traffic Survival School within 60 days. It is the same class they send DUI drivers to as part of their sanctions. So I spent about 5 hours Saturday learing about the horrors of drinking and driving which was so very helpful to me -a guy who doesn't drink - at all, let alone when driving. Some system.

The speed limit. A red light camera and they jacked the yellow light back from 4 seconds to 2 seconds! It's 72 degrees here - not a cloud in the sky and I'm stuck in this until 5PM. You have to pay a $260 fine AND do this crap. What a scam.

Hey, only the insured legal drivers get fined. You need to tell thecop, "No speaky Englich." You'll just get a warning. J/K

That's the point with fines. Even though the police will always argue that it is only for safety's sake. However, in Switzerland, fines make up at least 10% of the state's budget. So, it's hard to believe that they actually care about our safety. It's our wallet they're after :guns: :popo:

Here in Switzerland, there are speed cameras every 3 miles on the freeways, on top of the eventual mobile ones. And a new radar will be functional from 01.01.11. It consists of two cameras. The first is taking your picture as you drive down the freeway. The second is some miles further down the road. And it takes your picture again. If the supposed average for that sector is higher than the permitted speed limit, then they send you the picture as well.

Anyone said police state?
