OK - just a thought exercise

We all know there are replicas out there - here is the thought idea

What if some mfg of fakes decided to "go straight" - and produce watches under their own name - figure out a design/style, continue with whatever movement they are using now

What would you think?

to ME, if the price was RIGHT, it might actually be 'interesting' - get in on maybe the ground floor of a new maker

Your thoughts?

99% of the replica producers use garbage movements, crappy cases, and junk for bracelets. That idea doesn't interest me at all.

Well I can think of one such example straight off the top of my head where a well known producer of counterfeit watches decide to "go straight", and is now producing excellent and legitimate watches. And no I'm not going to say who it is just in case of legal ramifications!

However I'd say this is definitely more the exception than the rule. If you go straight you have to produce a quality product as you will need to provide a warranty, and most fake producing idiots don't give a damn about quality.

Personally I don't see any difference between a fake producer going straight, and a brand new small start-up brand. Both are making legitimate watches so in that regard the persons prior business is not really all that important.

A lot of the Chinese factories that churn out fakes churn out virtually identical watches with their own names on them, and I have no problem with those pieces. The quality is lousy, and I'm not sure that they are worth even the low prices that they sell for on eBay, but I have no issues with people producing and selling them - as Driver8 says it's just another watch company.
