I've always liked timepieces and the craftsmanship put into them. When I was a child, I bought a digital watch that was waterproof... I saved my allowance ($3 per week at the time) for a month and spent about $10 to buy it. I thought to myself...a watch you could swim with without fogging up the glass, WOW!

As I got older, I found myself growing fond of watches that features such as multiple time zones, luminous dials, etc.. Those pieces seemed like they were typically made for divers and pilots. It seemed as if I always leaned more toward the styling of a divers watch. In the mid 90's, I had a co-worker that owned a gold and stainless Submariner with a blue dial. I thought it was beautiful. I didn't know much about Rolex other than they were Swiss made, expensive, and James Bond wore one (I am a huge Bond fan). I swore I would never spend that kind of money to purchase a timepiece of this magnitude. Ten years passed. I saw an advertisement for Fortis in a magazine. It showed a Cosmonaut wearing one on the outside of his spacesuit, and thought it was a cool piece. I ordered a catalog from the 800 number at the bottom of the page. I decided to save my money to buy one. I told myself it would be the type of watch you could own for a lifetime if you took good care of it. After a couple of years, I worked up enough courage to part with my hard earned cash and bought a Fortis Flieger Chronograph. I owned it for a short time and started to compare the price I paid to other Fortis pieces I would see....I was still nervous from spending that much for a timepiece. Each time I would do this, I would notice the price of my timepiece going up. I started to research prices of other timepieces. I would notice pricing increases. I started thinking about the possibility of expanding my collection, and stepping up to own a Submariner.

I took a trip to my local AD, and wasn't treated very well. I was sincere about buying locally, and made an attempt to buy from Newton's in Fort Smith, AR. I left the store discouraged, and vowed to never return. After my wife encouraging me to get one and countless hours research on the internet, I had almost given up. While on our annual anniversary trip, I ran across an AD that treated me like I wanted to be treated. I purchased a Submariner from Ultra Jewels in Cancun, MX. Too bad I had to travel 1000 miles to do it, but it was well worth it. I ended up saving roughly $1500 from what my local AD had priced the piece to me. I have since visited Cancun area a total of five times now, and I stop by and chat with my salesperson every time I'm in the area. He just happened to have a Super Avenger in stock on this particular trip, and of course I said yes. The rest is history.

Sorry for being long winded!

I've owned my "holy grail" since 1996.

I often think people use the term grail a little bit different than I would.

For me, I need my grail to have a mystic attraction but also it shouldn't be too easy to obtain. It might be the price, or the number of watches, or both, that makes it more difficult to get. Even if I can fund it directly, the funding of a grail (again, for me) should include some sacrifices. Something like giving up a lot of other watches, to raise funds.

Anyway, this has been something I've desired for a while now, and as the price isn't really something I'll cough up the next few days it will stay on that list for a while.

Some might say it's dead ugly, but that doesn't matter.

When thinking about luxury items, I tend to put things into four categories: short term (1-2 years), medium term (5-10 years), long term (10+ years) and "I wish". With that in mind, here are my grails...

Short term (modelling pics on these ones are actually me, I am thinking of getting both of these in the near...ish future and as such have tried them on already):

Breitling Aerospace (2010)
Image

Breitling Cockpit Chrono (2009? The non-galactic version with the old-style bezel suits this model better, IMO)
Image

Medium term (haven't tried either of these on yet, but from photos I'm loving them:)

JLC Master Compressor Diving Chronograph Lady

JLC Master Compressor Diving Chronograph Lady Ceramique

Long Term / I wish:

PP Ladies Complicated Watches 4985g (I go back on forth on which PP I like the most, and I'll only ever be able to ever have one if I can even ever have one)
Image

AP Men's Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar

There's an Urwerk AD about 5 minutes from my office and I have had a few strapped to my wrist. You don't know how many conversations I have had with myself that start "It's only going to cost........"

You're right, it is ugly. It looks like the watch that Darth Vader would wear, I kinda like it.

Endless, mfserge -- perhaps we should club together and buy it as a time-share. Pretty sure it's the only way I'll ever get to own one of these; I have no idea what the retail would be and I am almost afraid to ask...

I think it will take a lot more than 3 of us to come up with the funds for that piece. I dot know the retail either but I'll guess 100k plus.

Maybe we need someone like Mr Sheen on board for my Timeshare Timepieces idea...

Of course, we will have to tell him he can only wear the watch to public, not "private", occasions so it doesn't go AWOL...

That ladies JLC MC Diving Chrono is sitting at my AD and were it not far too extravagent for a 19 year old daughter, that is the one I would have picked. I truly think it is the nicest women's watch I have seen in person. The blue touches on that watch led me to select the light blue croco for my daughter's Chopard Xmas surprise.

You definitely have great taste in ladies watches. :D Will be in town next week, might pop into the AD there and have a little peek...

Roff -- I suspect that still keeps it in the "I Wish" list, but it's good to know, at least, so thank you.

That JLC is a nice looking ladies timepiece!
(not sure the ones pictured are chronographs though, look like GMTs ?, may be less cost?)
