Looking for a way to ID an old Gruen I had given to me. No idea what it is, but it still runs. My neighbour is on his way out and sees my Ling. I tell him it's my daily wear but I'm looking to get into a Chronomat. He has a Rolex Submariner from the 70s he still wears daily. He tells me he has an old Gruen from the 30s that he wants me to have. He says it's gold etc and worth a lot. He gives it to me by putting it on my wrist, and I thank him (went back inside took it off before it scratches my Ling). It looks to me to be gold plated and not valuable at all. There is even some damage to the case, band etc. If I take it back to his house and put it down, he will likely forget he ever gave it to me. He gives me stuff all the time that I put back in his house. He collects all kinds of junk. He gave it to me to thank him for finding his wallet, which was on his bathroom counter. (He's losing it, forgets everything, repeats himself, doctors took away his lisense, guns, etc. He thinks everyone is out to get him and steal his wallet, but I always find it.) He also gave me $20 from his wallet when I found it. Trying to figure out which is worth more.

Anyone have an online source of a methodology for looking into what it is, I would appreciate it! If it's really valuable I should give it back to him.

Thanks!

American company that went bust in the 50s. It won't be worth much, but if you post some pictures I'll try and find some comparables in the guides and put a range on it.

Funny you say American company Roff as it says swiss on the dial!

I'm certain it's fairly worthless, not gonna throw it in the trash JUST yet though! I value your time and opinion roff, much appreciated!

Right, US company, Swiss watches - think Hamilton. It's an indication that it's fairly late.

Don't have something identical, but have a similar one with a different bezel and a square dial - dealer asking price $200 - $275, buying price about $125.

eBay is probably your best bet for something like this, but the market is flooded with them so that will always drive prices down. I got the numbers from a price guide.
