Had a chance to play with this beautiful JLC at the AD today while waiting for short straps to be fit to a couple watches. Big - maybe 44mm. But the subdial at 6 is a ONE SECOND dial whipping around at 1/6th second beats. It was the most annoying feature I've seen on a watch and it can't be stopped without stopping the time.


Now I'm not a very high end savvy guy, but why would JLC do something so seemingly stupid to an otherwise awesome and very expensive piece? Is there some function I am missing here??

Seriously, the eye goes only to that whizzing 1 second subdial whenever it is running.

Yeah I'm with you. JLC advertises it as allowing for accuracy to 1/6th of a second when setting the time, but it's a heavy price to pay for that with the annoying jumps (and that's as smooth as it can get as it's only a 3Hz movement). Of course if the hand can't set the crown in under 1/6th of a second it's irrelevant anyway - not to mention that accuracy like that on a mechanical non chrono is daft.

That said, the duometre concept is intriguing and the movement is a very clever piece of engineering - that element is just going one step too far.

So the subdial at 6 o'clock makes a full revolution every second?

YES! In 6 discernable beats. It makes the watch look like it's about to implode.

In all other respects it's absolutely beautiful. And the big deal is the dual power reserves.

Well what the hell is the purpose of that? I have not seen this one in person, but if the hand on that subdial it moving that quickly then I would think that my eye would constantly be drawn to it. It sounds like a watch with a bad case of OCD!!!

I love JLC's, but I am afraid this one does not make the cut for me.

Like a helicopter propeller....quite dumb in my opinion.

i think it's pretty neat. the jump showcases the 'heartbeat' of the watch vs an entirely smooth sweep. i dunno, if i were dropping 40k i'd want something unique going on...

Thats a fantastic watch, I get your point but the jumping second movement grows on you, soon enough its no longer out of the ordinary. I wish that watch was a bit bigger....

The movement of that hand was jerky and really fast. That's what made it so odd and distracting. There are plenty of other things they could have done with that place in the dial, something decorative would have helped a lot and not diminsished function since the "subdial on meth" has no REAL function anyway.

The idea that this feature is a representation of the beat or heart of the movement as opposed to a normal "entirely smooth sweep second hand" is one with which I can't agree. There is no such thing as an entirely smooth sweep second. Even on my Zenith Chronomaster with the mighty 36,000 VPH engine, I still can easily see the center chrono seconds beating though it does so at 10/sec. As I can on all my Lings as they vibrate 8 times through each second.

As for representing the "heart" of the movement, let me see the movement, don't make the dial into a freak show. If there was an otherwise lovley girl whose heart pressed 6 inches out of her chest with each beat would you sleep with her? Sure a poet might wax away about how symbolic of her "engine" this is, but I think the distraction might take more than a lifetime to get used to.

OK, that was just gross - sorry. Hey, it's not like I would be buying this watch either way. But my AD (who leaves for NYC in a couple days for JLC "high end" training) is quite off put by it and plans to discuss it with JLC.

I'd wager future generations of this fantastic watch will leave the silliness behind.
