Speak for yourself, I look much more impressive and successful, not to mention more attractive :nana:

Well the only reason I made the poll is because breitlings are expensive, even the cheap ones are....
and to the general public, "everyone" "thinks" rolex is expensive.

So I just wanted to see what the public perception and image is on breitling.

I think breitlings, at least most of them LOOK more expensive. Rolex's are just so played out now...it seems like everyone and their mother has one.

:yeahthat

 What? You mean an expensive watch DOESN'T make a person look more impressive and successful? :x GREAT now I've gone and spent all this money for nothing!!

:D Actually I buy them for my own enjoyment like most of ya'll on here and I enjoy the research into some of the history of them. :D I used to be one of those that wouldn't have spent more than $50 on a watch just to tell time, but I've learned the error of my ways and I truly enjoy owning these classic time pieces. Someone else also commented on the fact that they don't like trying to justify having a nice watch to someone that isn't into watches, to which I agree. :? You try to explain to them and all you hear is crickets chirping and the deer in the headlights glazed eyed stare. :?

I answered sometimes on the comments. Most comments I get are, "Nice looking watch, is that a REAL Breitling?" <--- that one irks me too!! :x For crying out loud...."Is that a REAL Brietling?" I always want to reply, "No jerk I bought a fake one just so I could have a DA like you ask me about it!!" or "Why yes it is....thank you for asking....are you sufficiently impressed now DA?" As for stares, the only reason folks stare at me is cuz I am funny looking, but it sure isn't because of my watch  ....so Hardly ever for that one.

is anyone here surprised by the poll results?

No. Not everyone is into watches, in fact I would argue that most people that I know aren't remotely into watches at all. I get the odd comment and look (that I notice) but mostly it's me doing the looking.

:yeahthat It doesn't surprise me at all to be honest.

I put down "hardly ever" for both. Firstly as Tim said, very few people are into watches that much, and as a result it's only WIS who will notice, unless you are shoving it right under someone's nose.

Secondly I personally tend to keep my watches hidden away under my shirt sleeve most of the time, as trying to show them off really isn't my thing. I buy watches for me and me alone, so whether other people notice or not is neither here nor there for me. And to be honest I hate trying to explain a) my interest in watches, and b) the price, to anyone who isn't into it themselves. Way too much hassle, and answering the good old "How can you justify spending that much on a watch when my £30 Timex does the job" question just irritates me.

This thread should be a 'must read' for those people who buy expensive watches in the hope that it will somehow make them look more impressive and successful. It honestly doesn't.

Nahhhh, I dont agree with that at all that a watch doesnt make someone look more successful.
Cars, watches, suits, houses....they all make people LOOK more successful, and chances are those people with all those...especially as a whole..ARE more successful

personally, when I see my watch or car or house, especially my suits...its a constant reminder of how hard I work and I deserve it.

what does that mean exactly....crickets chirping and the deer in the headlights...

I tried to explain to my younger sister whos 27 why i'm spending 8k on a watch and by the time i was finished with her...I felt like i was in a courtroom trying to justify myself to a judge. It was no point and she didnt get it. "its a waste of money"
I told her, i bet the resale percentage on my watch will be more than your car in 10 years lollll :nana:

 Well as for the crickets chirping...when you try to explain something to someone who is clueless...all you hear is silence and in the silence you can hear the crickets chirping. They are totally unable to comprehend what they are hearing and they just can't get their head around the concept...rendering them silent.

Have you ever been driving down the road at night and seen a deer in the beam of your headlights? They are about the size of saucers and all glazed over...and they just stand there staring into the light, totally not getting the fact they are fixing to be roadkill. This kind of look usually accompanies the above description of crickets chirping....LOL!!

 Sometimes if you are trying to explain your passion for watches to a really ummm slow subject; you will get all of the above, also accompanied by a little drool coming out the side of their mouth as they stand there all slack jawed.

I get a few comments about my SOHC LE.

However, at least half of these are about the bracelet. Non-WIS types eh? Go figure.

I get complimentary comments from time to time. They're typically of the nature, "That's a nice watch," or "That's a nice big watch." It is exceedingly rare that anyone actually recognizes my watch as a Breitling.

One time at a party, a guy did recognize my watch as a Breitling. He asked me where I got it, and I said "Gumer Jewelry" (my AD). He replied that he was Joey Gumer, the owner's grandson. He was also banging my ex-girlfriend's former roommate. (And no, this is not a Spaceballs joke; I'm being serious.) Small world.

I can't say I notice whether or not people are staring at my watch.

This begs the question...when you notice someone else's B'Ling do you comment on it?

Sure a nice house makes you look more successful because they cost hundreds of thousands, can't be faked, and everyone on earth knows what a nice house looks like. The same goes for a nice car although to a slightly lesser extent as not everyone knows cars that well. But a watch?? Not really at all IMO. 99% of people on earth wouldn't know a Breitling from a Timex (or an Invicta as we've seen here!). Additionally watches can be faked very easily and everyone knows they can, so the chances are pretty high that if you are a regular looking guy but with a nice watch on a whole bunch of people will just think it's fake anyway. I absolutely maintain that buying a watch for the sole reason of trying to make you appear more successful, is a total waste of time and money. Buy them because you like them, but not just as way of trying to impress others.

I get quick glances because my crosswind is just so shiny, but never any comments. More people ask me about my Omega. But if you want women to notice and talk to you (this doesn't work out well for me because I am married) but my Chanel J 12 by far has been a gigantic chick magnet. I think because most owners of the J 12 are women. I get comments every time I wear that watch. I also agree with the other poster that Invicta should be sued by most if not all the luxury watch makers.

Just because someone has a nice house or expensive car does NOT make them successful. For all we know, that house could have three mortgages on it and that car is leased or a loaner . Sometimes perception is greater than reality...

Superocean and a Chrono Superocean. To non-watch enthusiasts, I think 40mm and above is big.

Stares & comments all the time but that was to be expected with a Coral coloured Emergency with UTC.
If I don't want to be hasseled by questions about the watch I am wearing I simply wear somthing else like my Panerai or Rolex.
Hardly ever any questions about these 2
:)
