In regards to movements in watches...(For example Breitlings) What is the point(or need) of having different Calibers for almost every watch? In other words what is the point and why can't you put the same movement that is in the Navitimer as the Chronomat?

Just trying to educate myself on this a little more.

Well for a start different calibers have different functions - some are time only and some are chronographs. Next, they have different dial layouts - running seconds at different places, two subs vs. 3, tri-compax vs. 6, 9, 12, etc. Then there are different complications - big date, GMT, etc. You also have different sizes - you can put the chronograph movement from a 35mm watch into a 48mm watch but then the subdials will be near the centre with a bunch of nothing on the outside.

There are a lot of movements that share common bases - the 2892 platform was designed as a time only piece that can have modules added to it for different complications, but obviously each different addition forms a different caliber.

The practical difference of having different dial layouts is debatable, and obviously the 7750 based B13 movement gets a lot of reuse, but all brands offer variety - same logic as why car manufacturers offer so many different models.

I understand that part of it... but why are some "better" than others when they are all ETA movements?

I'm not sure that some are 'better' - at least in terms of what Breitling uses.

That is what I would think too. I guess I miss interpreted what people were saying. Thanks!
