There's been an awful lot of talk about "sandwich dials" lately. I wasn't 100% what this meant, but used the search function on here and I think I good idea now.

The vast majority of "sandwich" posts pertained to PAMs. Has Breitling ever done a sandwich dial :?:

There should never be a sandwich dial on a Breitlimg. I love my BB, but I feel like the brand tries to be too many things to too many people at times.

Panerai doesn't mix it up too much - you either love them or you don't...and there's nOthing wrong with that :D

A two level dial with the bottom layer coated in lume and the top layer having the markers cut out so that the lume on the bottom layer shows through. The two layers are stuck together to form a 'sandwich'. Gives the dial more depth and improves the lume.

Cheers Roff. This is what I like about watch forums, learning all the time :)

I had a guess that it was some kind of laminated construction, but until I googled it didn't know what this achieved

Is the sandwich dial commonly associated with any specific designer/brand/atelier etc as in it's thier trademark or something?

It's not a trademark or patent, it's just a design style. Most notably Panerai. I was looking at these again today while taking another look at the Breguet Type XXI and must say I like the look of the sandwich dial. Could even see the lume in jewelry store lighting. Really "wanted" to like the Pams, but just not working for me.

Alas, a Paneristi I shall ne'er be.

Checked out a few Panerai models with the sandwich dial, but I'm really not keen on that feature. IMO it just seems to cheapen the dial finish, not keen on it at all.

I'm with you on that one sharkman. I'm gonna go on the record as saying never.

Speaking of sharkman, I have a pic of me carrying a Blacktip Reef Shark pup that earned me the nickname Sharkman by some of my staff at the time.

^^^ +2 from me. Leave it to Panerai I think, it has it's place there.

Cheers
