I'm starting to lean towards the 317 or 311. The 339 and 348 were what really woke me up to the fact that Panerai may be changing enough to start appealing to me, but I do prefer the Luminor style to the Radiomir, and of course they both have the 1950 case as well.

The titanium doesn't bother me as much as it used to, but the ceramic is appealing, and I agree that the PVD movement is better than the 335 style smoked sapphire. Of course that also comes out to be the most expensive option - one on Chrono24 right now for almost $30,000 and one on Paneristi a couple of weeks ago for $23,750 - list is a little over $25,500 I believe - more than $4,000 more than the 311.

Geez Roff, I've been away for less than a week and this is the last thing I expected to return to!

Disclaimer - I don't like PAM's. I know you're typically into the more unique pieces these days, but I'm not sure if just "any" PAM is unique enough. If you really want to go off the deep end, the 339 sounds like it will do the trick. :poke:

How much of this newfound PAM infatuation is a result of your wife's recent interest?

I started to take more notice after their 2010 model announcements, but there isn't a PAM AD terribly close to me and I wouldn't have gone out of my way to investigate more thoroughly if dearly beloved hadn't decided that she had to have a 243.

Two down, blood in the water, Sharky next...

Roff, forgot to ask if you're REALLY sure you want to do this...? Knowing your love of vintage watches and er, indifferent attitude towards pricing ("irrelevant!"), I can easily see you going from the 317 and the Egizianos to the Pre-A and Pre-V Pams -- and those would cost a car (or two)...

Judging by the prices Roff was tossing around earlier he's already at a car or two.

Not to hijack the thread but...

Don't worry Sharky, you're not alone. I've looked at PAMS, tried them on and still don't like them and really don't understand the appeal. I appreciate the timepieces but from afar

I may also be one of the onle people here who can't even provide the slightest piece of advice either so I won't.

Good luck Roff!

In that case Roff, I say get the 317, I do think that your one and only Panerai should have a black dial, that is as characteristic of them as the sandwhich dial.

I am leaning that way right now, but the street price premium over the 311 is still a little scary. With only 500 of the PVD movements the prices are pretty high secondary market - I could pick one up today for $30,000, but that doesn't make sense to me. If prices don't improve then I am looking at pretty much a 311 plus an in house Navitimer or a 317!

I think the 339 is out because the Radiomir case isn't my preference the more I think of it. Of course the other option is to start building an AD relationship and then see what next year's models look like, the way that they are going seems to be more to my liking and I would be PO'd if I bought a 317 and then they announce a skeleton in a 1950 case.

You've mentioned skeleton a few times now, is this a rumor you heard or just something you're hoping for?

PAM 348 announced this year:

Tourbillon GMT coming in at $150k, but if it's a sign of things to come........

Given that I would likely be buying at Christmas time anyway, and Panerai announces models at SIHH, which is now January rather than at the same time as Basel, it may be worth waiting for announcements.

I know that is completely unnecessary but I want it.
