Craig's work is incredible - more than happy to recommend him.

In fact I need to buy some more junkers for you to work wonders on Craig

I can't tell for certain from the picture, but I lead towards that it's a Val 72, it's definitely not from 1954 though, it has the matt silver plated hands which I have only seen on 1 or 2 Venus 178's, so that's another pointer towards Val 72.

I almost called it as Valjoux based on the hands, but as you say it's not conclusive.

I find this one intriguing knowing that it can't be later than 1955 from the watch's history.

10 minutes later . . . ! ! !

It's (unfortunately) a Venus 178, and I'm certain

Ok, so what was the giveaway for you?

And don't be disappointed - it may have a 1952 serial number :poke:

To be honest I based it on the reference nr on the back, but now I come in mind that I have actually seen one Val 72 with 806 on the caseback, so I eat my certanty, excuse and walks backwards out the door.

The doubt is still very much alive, and I will wait for a picture that will tell us for sure.

Thanks guys for all the great information & discussion! I am looking for a good watchmaker to take it to & will certainly post pics once it is opened. Now I don't feel so bad that I wasn't sure which it was myself. I'm starting to get offers on it, so I am going to have to pin it down very soon!

Don't sell it until you know what it is. This could be 'just' another Navitimer, or it could be something very special - and there are sharks out there. There's enough people here who can help make sure that everyone gets a fair deal and I'll happily provide opinions to buyer and seller when the time comes - but only if I am not a potential buyer myself. I don't think that it's fair to offer detailed pricing guidance if I have a vested interest.

Nope, I definitely would not let it go without knowing as much as possible about it. I think the next step is to get pics of the movement & serial number, so everyone can see what it is for sure. I cannot tell you how much we appreciate all of the honesty & input here! It helps a lot!

You might have a Valjoux 72 in there which adds about 30 to 50% to the value. If you want to send it to me, I can give you an evaluation of its condition and the movement used. I can also do the restoration (check with the moderator as a reference). In any case, don't do anything with it until you get the back off and have some pics of the movement. Craig

Hi Craig,
I took a look at your website. Wow! That is some absolutely AMAZING work! We're taking all options under consideration right now, but not rushing into any decisions. I may take the watch to a watchmaker this weekend if I can get a spare minute. I have bookmarked your website for future reference. Thank you!

For anyone waiting on pins & needles to see the inside, the watchmaker that I want to see was on vacation until next week, so we will all have to wait a bit longer. Sorry.

Funny, but no one has asked if the watch runs. Must not matter much :)
