I have been looking at the Used Ling market for quite sometime ,and am amazed at some of the prices I am seeing being asked and sold for. Example new version Super Avenger can be purchased pretty much all day long new for around 3500 or so in the US at an AD, used on ebay and other forums you have people wanting 3300 3200 for them and there are actually people who purchase them at these prices. I damn near had to give my Superocean Heritage 46 away at 1800 and sat with it for a month until it sold . I just don't see what is driving these prices... I want a Black Steel Sa but the prices I am seeing are absolutely stunning. I have seen used pieces sell for 4500 to 5k, looks like this watch will be out of my grasp for sometime. They made 3000 pieces of the blacksteel, in my eyes this is not a rare piece. Take 3 thousand dimes and line them up on the floor and see how many there are compared to a limited piece of say 1000. I am just curious what others think about these prices, and why these pieces are fetching so much .

i would guess that the people buying the used lings for a high price are most likely people that are new to the brand or the watch market. When you first visit an AD and if you know nothing the chances of you getting a 25-30% discount off the watch is pretty slim. so in this case i think that people settle for the next best thing which is used or grey market products.

If you are paying $3500 at AD - don't forget to add taxes to that amount. In NY that's another $300.

You don't pay tax in the secondary market. So if you buy virtually new watch for $3,200 - that's 15% savings. Not too bad.

Ebay is always going to be overpriced and like boogiebot said, the people buying those are people most likely new to the watch world. I had a BNIB Super Avenger with the black dial that I ended up selling for $3050. The same watch new from an AD would probably cost around $3400 so there are some savings out there. At the same time, I sold a BNIB blue dial Navi World on the bracelet for $3800. Even though the watches may be labeled as sold with a price tag of $3400 on the forums, it's highly unlikely that they actually sold for that price. Regarding your SOH46, it's not a watch for everyone so finding a buyer would take some time.

The whole Blacksteel pricing thing is a mystique. It makes me laugh when I read about how rare they are and how much of a price premium they command.

I bought my ASBS new from an AD when the Canadian list was $4,750. I paid $4,100 including 13% tax, and could have sold it on eBay the same day for close to $1,000 more. You still see them listed now for more than I paid.

For some reason people seem willing to pay a huge premium in the secondary market for the BS versions even though they are all 2,000 or 3,000 runs.

I would like to think people educate themselves before they make a purchase of significance but maybe I am wrong. I educate myself first and then look for the best possible deal. Their may be such buyers who buy at the spur of the moment but for the most part the buyer shops around. I tend to buy out of state to avoid the taxes ,and would like to think others do aswell. I don't think of myself as a cheap person , just someone frugal looking for the best deal. Maybe I am the minority...

Roff these blacksteel pieces are nuts!!! There was a used one that sold for 6200 on ebay just within the past 10 days. The watch is super nice but 6200 is insane. My motto is " IF THE PIECE IS NEW AND IMPROVED , THE PRICE HAS PROBABLY GONE UP" I will wait a year or so til the blacksteel market dies down, its almost certain with Breitling selling out this model in blacksteel more blacksteels will be in the works in different models.

But the question is, how do you determine what the "right" price should be? Do you just comb through all of the posts on the WTB section of this forum and then compare them to eBay and then to MSRP?

I just pickup up a used Navitimer World on a Breitling leather strap for $2,800 but it's going to lack papers and booklets. In my newbie mind, this was quite a deal considering new is $6,800 (+8.25% tax in Texas) and the best deal I could get from some (reputable) Forum Guys was 30%. Don't get me wrong, 30% is a great deal, but even if I pick up a new bracelet for my NavWorld, this still only gets me to around $3,800, versus $4,760 for 30% & new (AND I would then have the leather strap AND the bracelet).

Anyway, back to the question at hand:

How does one know what a "good deal" really is?

so, $900 for a new navi world from an AD with papers and a box. when considering that this would be brand new and come with a minimum of 2 year warranty, it think $900 is not that much to pay.

But for $450, he can get his watch serviced and have a warranty and a like new finish. He's still ahead.

If you believe the theory that the market sets the prices then the sold auction items on eBay (not the BINs or the pieces that don't sell) will give you some idea, although it depends on how many pieces come up - if they don't show up often then prices will reflect that.

The forums give you some idea, ad do places like Chrono24, although you have to remember that they are asking prices. On forums you can see where prices drop to before selling which will give you some idea - people can ask what they like so you can't just look at the initial 'headline' price.

At the end of the day though I think that it's a mugs game to try and find the 'perfect' price. My attitude is that if I feel that the price is fair then I'll buy it - I could wait to try and find one cheaper, and who knows maybe it will sho up tomorrow. On the other hand it may not show up for several months - time that I could spend enjoying the watch.
