Wow..Great advice guys...thanks so much...I dont really have my heart set on a Breitling per say, but would be nice of course.

I am the type of guy that will pay more in the beginning for something nice if in 5 years I dont have to buy it again...(polo shirts, nice shoes, etc...) If I have to bump my budget to say $1000 then I will, might take a couple months of saving it though.

Therefore, my next question is...DO I PUT $400 INTO AN OKAY WATCH, OR BUMP MY BUDGET TO $750-1000 AFTER A COUPLE MONTHS AND JUST WEAR MY SAME OLD $200 KENNETH COLE WATCH FOR NOW?

Any and all comments are appreciated.

Thanks so much...Jim By the way...Bracelets are out for me, it just doesnt fit my style

I would save for definite, would give you time to narrow down what you really want too.

If it was me I'd rather wait and get a watch that I really want for $1000 than get one for $400 just to get a new one. I know that I would kick myself later for settling on something that I really didn't want when if I'd have had a little patience and saved for the one that I wanted I'd have been much happier in the end.
That being said, it's all up to you. If there is a watch that you really want that costs around $1000 then I would suggest waiting and getting that one as opposed to getting something that you will get tired of. For $1000ish you can find a nice Oris or Hamilton (or a number of other brands that I can't think of right now) brand new that would be an automatic and probably a chrono and would be worth more if you wanted to sell it later to upgrade to say a Breitling or an Omega or something like that. Just my 2 cents. Good luck with your future purchase.

I agree with the rest of the crew. No sense in rushing in when there are plenty of inexpensive options to tide you over while you save. The Seiko Monster is great, I can attest from experience since I have one :D

I don't know how I could have overlooked Debaufre, they are also a great entry level Swiss option if you decide to blow the wad up front. The Ocean-1 pays pretty good respect to the Rolex Submariner.

Also, since you're a newbie and I doubt your parents included this in the "sex drugs and alcohol" talk when you were young - stay away from the likes of Invicta and Rado. Not that they're "bad" watches, but the attractive price point comes at a cost. Better you hear it here than buy one and learn the hard way like I did.

Check out Helson watches. They make some really cool divers which would fit your specs, as well as your budget. Do yourself a favor and check out the Helson Shark diver. Really cool piece IMO and great for the price.

Yes I mean to include the Sharkhunter. There are plenty of watches if your budget increases to $1000.

But like it was noted by another member, if you do that you may as well hold out for a good quality used Steelfish which can be had for under $2000.

I've been checking out dive whates for under a thousand and there are loads I like, particularly the Benarus GMT World Diver. (there is a thread here you may check out called "Dive Watches for under $1000.") You can get that with 3 straps and a mesh bracelelet for under - barely - $1000.

If you are spending under $1000, it really may not be important the watch is "assembled" in Switzerland. What you want to ensure is the watch has a Swiss ETA movement.

Check out the Boschett Reef Ranger - it is right in you price range, I'm impressed with their Cave Dweller I own, and you can opt for a mag crystal for the date window. At least 3 memebers here have the Cave Dweller, but it might be a bit chuncky with a suit. Whereas the Reef is more middle of the road.

Good luck.

Well, it sounds like you'll want something on a bracelet if you're going to try and dress it up for work and still have it work for your outdoor activities. Of course, bracelets aren't super well suited to outdoor stuff - there will eventually be damage. The Swiss requirement and the penchant for chronograph looks are good bits of info though, as they rule out the Suunto suggestion. They are right in your price range, can dress up if you are a big enough guy and get the right model, but provide a ton of rugged outdoor features when you're having fun.

Now, in the world of high or even mid-range watches, the chronograph always carries a higher price tag. More complex, higher maintenance costs when the time comes, etc. Breitling is of course well known for their chronographs, but you can find a ton of different options out there.

I see Jay suggested Oris, which is a downright wise suggestion given your price point. Personally I don't think I've ever seen an Oris that jumped out at me as a really "wow!" watch, though. That said, they are good quality, come in a wide range of styles and should fit the bill - especially secondhand.

It is also worth checking out Hamilton, they are a classic American marque that was incorporated into the Swatch group some years ago, and they are a good quality Swiss made watch. Amazon sells a good number of their models.

There are also things like the Marathon SAR series. Those might bend your budget a bit, but they are military-spec, rugged, good looking, Swiss made, Tritium lumed, and will last forever. And don't be put off by the military spec - on a bracelet, they are just as attractive and dressy as many other divers.

Now, if you're willing to consider Japanese watches you open the wide world of Seiko. Don't let the name put you off, they make some truly excellent automatic timepieces with the build quality and accuracy to rival ones costing ten times as much. And, since you're just starting out, your budget would let you get two of them - one to dress up, one to have fun.

There is a nice seiko alpinist on TZ that looks nice and is a resonable price. It may be a good watch until you can save and get what you want.

If you are OK with used and quartz watches - I recently saw a forum member selling Breitling Colt Quartz for $500 (not exactly $400, but very close). It's not the current model, but it's great starter watch for a person on a budget.

I just have to remember where I saw that listing - here or on other watch forums. Drop me a PM if you are interested, I'll try to look up that ad for you.

I remember that one, I think it was cross posted here and on WUS. Is this the one? http://forums.watchuseek.com/showthread.php?t=408383

The turnoff there is the lack of B&P. Plus the Colt is small-ish, but our new member has not mentioned his wrist size so it may be fine....

A budget of $1000 really opens up your opportunities. . .for that money you can buy a nice used Omega SMP on a rubber strap. Depending on how you feel about buying and selling, you could take a "baby step" and buy something to hold you over while you continue to save. A well bought, popular model watch can always be flipped. Take it from me, I'm an expert flipper

There is a good guide to it here:

http://shopping-tools.reeds.com/WatchSizeGuide.html

There is a measurement tool you can print out halfway down that will tell you your wrist size.
