I didn't post this earlier because I was considering bidding on it. In the end it went higher than I was prepared to go - I'm not mad keen on the design, but I still think that this is one heck of a bargain - http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... K:MEWAX:IT

Now I know it's a niche manufacturer, and the colour is going to put some people off, but the fact remains that this is a brand new 1 / 1 limited edition tourbillon for entry level PP / upper mid range JLC money.

There have been some signs of the market recovering for high end watches, but this is a clear step backwards from that. It's one watch, and I'm not going to read too much into it, but I wonder whether it's a symptom of people moving towards more mainstream brands to try to preserve some of the investment in the event that they need to sell.

like you said it's a niche brand...imo ebay is the wrong venue for these kind of items. people who go on ebay are looking for bargains on rolex, breitling, tags on down to the seikos...the more mainstream brands. watch nuts/enthusiasts/collectors/investors etc are less likely to follow ebay too closely. i know nothing about this particular watch but feel confident that it would've realized a better price elsewhere like a major watch auction.

I suspect that you are right, but I'm not sure that the seller would have netted much more with the charges that Antiquorum charge. Even in a collector watch auction I suspect that this would only be a $22 - $25k piece in this market. For collectors with the cash and a liking for niche brands it's still clearly a good time to buy.

I'm actually slightly regretting not buying the piece to sell because I think that there is profit in it if you buy and hold for a couple of years, but as we know I don't generally do that with my collection.

Hey Roff. Not really my style, but it did go for a truely amazing price considering what you're getting. Definitely fits with your new approach of getting unique pieces.

Well that's why I didn't buy it - I don't think that I would have been able to resist wearing it and then it would be part of the collection and would never be sold, and didn't really want to put another $20,000 into watches after the last few weeks.

IMO Alain Silberstein is absolutely a niche brand, i was going to suggest, just what Roff said.(Antiquorum) However, I agree that commissions would most likely be too high to justify it's sale for the seller. With that said, it just has to be understood that it is a dead watch and it is not going to peak the interest of many. At least not at this time.
