Interesting indeed.

Marty is much more qualified to comment than I am, but I think that the implication is that at least one of hte wheels was out of round. The technical term for the meshing is depthing and it can be a common problem with watches - it's a challenge that I have when trying to bring old pocket watches back to life. However, if both wheels are round then the depthing will be consistent - it may be too shallow or too deep, but it shouldn't vary. The fact that this only occurred for part of the rotation suggests to me that the wheel is out of round.

I think that the production numbers are a little low - the 2008 numbers that were submitted to COSC was about 290,000, although I would believe that 200,000 is closer to the 2009 numbers because of the economy - we'll get a better idea when COSC announces 2009 numbers in a couple of months.

I hope that the watch is back with you on Friday and that all is resolved.

Roff, thanks for the additional insight into the issue I was experiencing. Fortunately for other B01 owners, the person I spoke with said this is the first issue like this he's seen with the B01.

Update 2: . . . to anyone who still cares about this thread.

I just got off the phone with a technical director at BUSA who advised my watch has been fixed and will be back to me on Friday. Here's how he explained what was wrong with my watch. Note that he explained this to me in layman terms, so don't expect a very technical regurgitation from me:

The chronograph on the B01 movement utilizes a vertical clutch, which consists of two wheels. When the chrono is engaged, the first wheel meshes with the second wheel and the sweeping hand moves around the dial. The movement in my watch did not have enough tension between these two wheels, so at a certain point, the sweeping hand would "flutter" due to the wheels meshing improperly. He did not mention the wheel being out of round like last week, so I'm unclear if the lack of tension and roundness have any correlation.

On another note, I did take the opportunity to tell him how disappointed I was with the 2010 Breitling lineup- especially with the B01 bezel being slapped on so many new offerings. He acknowledged the economy of the past couple years has had a great influence on the direction of the company, but did not directly address why they decided to proliferate the B01 bezel. We got to talking a little about the 70-hour power reserve and how it can increase the accuracy of a watch. I also mentioned it's good for adding other complications to a movement. Without directly saying it, he agreed and implied Breitling definitely has some other plans for the B01 movement. I followed up by saying I'd love to see the movement in a Navitimer World case, to which he said, "Just wait."

In addition to the non-definitive answers, I did receive some hard pieces of data from him. He advised Breitling produces between 150,000-200,000 watches per year and they are planning on 70,000-80,000 of them to contain the B01 movement in the near future. I believe these numbers are pretty in line with other posts that touch on this topic. He did speak about the whole Swatch discontinuing movements issue, but this isn't anything we didn't already know.

-Craig

Thanks, interesting to hear the technical director!

This is strictly conjecture on my part since I haven't seen the layout of the clutch and chrono wheels. With the vertical clutch fully engaged, there should be no slipping, flutter, etc. if the friction coefficient is constant. I can think of only two things that would change the friction coefficient during the revolution of the center seconds hand. One would be improper alignment of the clutch mechanism and the other would be improper depthing cause by one of the wheels being slightly out of round. Chrono wheels have a lot of very fine teeth. They provide smooth operation of the sweep. They must be perfectly round and the teeth are very delicate. Given the fact that the problem changed position from one assembly to another, I would suspect some type of problem with the wheels vice a problem with the clutch.

Without seeing the B01 movement, I am thinking there still needs to be an intermediate gear between the fourth wheel and the center sweep second wheel to provide proper direction of rotation. I would think that they remain fully engaged and the clutch operates to provide power from the fourth wheel when the chrono is running.

There's certainly been a great deal of griping on the forum as of late about Breitling, due in large to the lackluster 2010 offerings. To switch it up a bit, I would like to say how incredibly impressed I've been with Breitling's customer service. The best way to evaluate the true colors of any given company is to see how they handle their customers when something goes wrong. In short, Breitling exceeded my expectations in every single way.

By the time I hung up the phone on my initial call to BUSA, I had a direct contact number for a customer service rep and a watchmaker. This was followed up a couple days later by a call from a technical director at BUSA. Thereafter, I received daily updates (yes, DAILY) from the technical director explaining the progress they were making on my B01. Just so there's no confusion, the director was calling ME! I never needed to dial him.

There's another thread on here about a guy who got water in his watch and Breitling is refusing to fix it. If I was in his position, I may feel differently and be very upset like he is. However, my experience with Breitling was the complete opposite. I'm not sure if I received "special" treatment due to the fact I was sending their new flagship movement in for service, but I'd like to think they would treat any customer the way the did me.

Also, they're sending my watch back via next day delivery. Again, I'm not sure if that's normal, but I certainly won't complain.

Great news Craig, and that's truly superb customer service from Breitling. IMO it just goes to show the benefit of Breitling not being a part of a huge conglomerate like the Swatch or Richemont Groups. They are not so huge as too totally forget about the little man..... unlike some others out there.

On a related point, I had it confirmed to me from a very good source recently that the B01 movement is seen by the company as the cornerstone of their high-end models for many years to come. And the B01 WILL be making it's way into other models "fairly soon". Now "fairly soon" means different things to different people - to some, "fairly soon" is next week, while to others "fairly soon" may mean within a couple of years. Time will tell what "fairly soon" means to Breitling, but it's good to know that something will be happening, and that the in-house aspect is here to stay. :D

hi, Craig. sorry to learn of what has occurred to your beloved B01. I've just cheked mine, with the chronograph having beeen running for more than half an hour, and the problem did not occur to mine.

Good luck and keeep us updated.

Driver, I did mention to the technical director that I really appreciated the fact Breitling was still a privately owned company. We both agreed that Swatch and Richemont need to stay away. Between your source and mine, it sounds like it's inevitable the B01 movement will be making its way into many watches in Breitling's lineup in the future. Let's hope the Navitimer is next on the list.

fromchina, I'm glad to hear your watch is not exhibiting the same issue. I truly do believe it was an isolated indecent, so I don't think any other B01 owners have much to worry about. Considering the watch has been out for a year and this is the first chronograph wheel BUSA's seen that's out of round, I can't imagine the problem is very prevalent.

I bought mine from Mayors, and they give you 3 years additional Warrenty, so I am not worried. So far it is a very robust watch

Regardless, I think this does confirm the 1/2 hour totalizer on the B01 moves with a more constant motion than the minute totalizer, which "snaps" to the next notch after every revolution of the sweeping chrono hand. Unfortunately, my sweeping chrono hand is still very messed up, so the watch is still headed back to BUSA. I'm interested to see if my chrono starts working like yours after I get it back.

-Craig

I agree. This is how mine works as well. The 1/2 totalizer creeps while the minute totalizer snaps (starting when the chrono hand is around 58 sec or so).

You're very welcome, Dave. I'm glad to know at least one person appreciated my ramblings.

Read my post after googling My BO1 has a problem. There I was able to post my hands on experience with a BO1 I tested today that had a much more serious problem, right in the Breitling Boutique, brand new Limited Edition BO1 no less!!
My experience is at the bottom of that post
