Another thing, just to point out. Isn´t this yet one more example of the B01 doing excactly what it was designed to do. To bring new buyers to Breitling. Just a random guy. No WIS, no Breitling fan just someone with some money who would like to buy a nice watch and ends up choosin the B01!!!

I have a friend who went the same route and there´s been similar stories before.

Even if you don´t like the piece, shouldn´t it atleast be aknowledged that Breitlings is on to something with it? I mean it seems to be working for them???

I personally don't dislike it, but don't like it either, specially the rotating bezel. The font is too "modern", not that being modern is a bad thing, but I can't see this new bezel becoming a classic, if that makes sense.

I believe they have improved the water resistance up to 500 meters too?

It's taken a while, but this post by Driver8 just promped me to go down to my AD, they've got a few in, in different configurations. I love the roman numerals even more now, and was amazed by how different I thought it looked in the "flesh". I've completely changed my opinion on it, and still can't decide if I like it :?

I tried on the Air Racer bracelet also, I can't stand it. It seems if you have the right size wrist it would be amazing, but for me it was the worst thing ever, which is a shame as I like the look! :poke:

It happened to me either. I love how it looks, but I suppose it is designed for thicker wrists than mine (6.6 inches). It's a shame that I don't like leather, and can't stand the Air Racer, and so I can't have a Cosmonaute 125th Anniversary model...

Signage and the internet are doing the B01 an injustice, its much better in the flesh than on the internet or on signage, cant explain why, it just is! I got the riviera blue in the romans, just a sensational piece. got a really good deal from an Australian AD on the cost of the ocean racer with the clasp, I got the pilot bracelet on at the moment, but I always think its good to get the different look. Anyway, in any combo the B01 does the business.

Well now! I currently have in my possession (courtesy of FEAR) a brand new Chronomat B01! Now before I go on, I need to stress (in very LARGE letters) that it's not mine. I purchased it on behalf of a good mate of mine who freely admits to knowing next to nothing about watches (but he has cash and loves the look at the B01), and he travels quite a lot with work meaning that taking delivery was always going to be a problem for him. Hence he gave me the cash and left it to me to do the deal with FEAR.

Anyway, the guy's away in Europe for a couple more weeks, which means that this Chronomat B01 will be sitting in my safe for a little while yet.......... so while I obviously would never wear it, it doesn't mean I can't look at it a bit ( :D ), and so I thought this would be a good opportunity to see whether having one closely to hand for a period of time may have any impact on my own impressions of it (especially given that I'm quite a vocal opponent of the styling). Prior to this, my contact with the B01 has been limited to handling a number of different versions at my AD for no more than about 15 mins or so at a time, so this is quite a novelty.

So.... how does it stack up? Well, I must be honest here, but it is beautifully finished. I had a good look at the dial through my x5 loupe and it's absolutely flawless. The patterning on the dial where the square overlaps the subdials is a real work of art. It's difficult to say if it's any better than any other Breitling in that respect (as all Breitlings are beautifully put together), but there is definitely more in terms of subtle textures going on, so in that regard the beautiful execution is all the more impressive.

The case is also (IMO) a step up from the Aeromarine models in terms of subtle changes of angle on the case profile. The slight curvature top to bottom on the side of the case (that I noted in my initial "first encounter" review last year) really does give it a little more visual interest compared to the more slab-sided look of the Aeromarines. (Don't get me wrong here - the Aeromarine models are superb in their own right and are priced differently, so this isn't a "knock the cheaper models" exercise - more just an observation of design and finishing).

I guess what I'm saying in terms of the dial and case is that there is a lot more subtlety to the design that initially meets the eye.

Size wise, well I have to make a confession here. Recently I've been finding my SA han't been getting so much wrist time due to it's size/thickness. The Bentleys are fine as they are thinner, but more and more recently I've been finding that my sweet-spot as far as size goes is 44 to 46mm. My Navi World and IWC BP at 46mm are both perfect. 44mm Panerai's look spot on as well, and my 44.7mm Doxa is a great size despite wearing slightly smaller that it's size would suggest on account of the shortened lug design. On any other watch forum, that would still be seen as massive, but here it's very much middle of the road. So while I'd rather the Chonomat B01 was a fraction bigger, it's longer lugs seem to make up for the diameter a little, and as a result the size is not quite the killer blow that it was when I first saw the specs and picked one up.

Now......THAT bezel. Yes it's still an odd choice of font. Still no doubt in my mind about that at all - but in it's defence, it's no where near as intrusive when it's away from the bright lights of an AD, and a million miles away from the "in your face" appearance in the publicity pictures. It's kind of like the "Original Gas Escape Valve" wording on the SDDS. That said, if they'd just stuck to a more traditional font, I'm pretty sure more people would've warmed to it from the outset. The final point on the bezel (and this is the real shock for me), is that I think I'm actually warming a little to the reduced profile rider tabs! After spending a decent amount of time handling this Chronomat B01, looking at the dial under a loupe, etc, etc, I must confess that when I picked up my SA immediately afterwards, the riders actually looked a little dated. OK, so it took me all of about 10 seconds to get back into the traditional riders again, but there's no denying that the reduced riders do look quite modern and sleek. This was a complete shock to me as I've said numerous times that for me the riders are an integral part of the Breitling DNA, so maybe, just maybe I'm a little more prepared to accept the new look than I once was. (It's taken over a year and temporary ownership of one for a few days for me to even start to accept it, but hey, a start's a start! )

I can't comment on the movement as the watch is not mine, so I'm not prepared to mess around with it like that.

So there we are. Would I now buy one myself? In a word - No. It's still not traditional enough for me, but I think my opinions on it have moderated a little after being in the presence of one for 3 or 4 days now. However, that said, I'm not feeling that it's the bastard creation that I once did. Maybe there is a place for both the old and the new bezels, although I have a sneeking suspicion that Breitling will ditch the old riders altogether before long. A quick look at the Windrider range in the "Pure Breitling" catalogue shows that only the old Chronomat and the BB retain the old bezel - the other 5 all sport the new bezel..... :?

My mate isn't back from Germany for another couple of weeks or so, so this B01 is going to be living with me for a little bit longer yet. Who knows how I might feel about it by then!

:drunk: :banhim: :banhim: :banhim: :banhim: :argue: :argue: :banhim:
Heresey!!!! Blasphemer!!!!
That watch is the Breitling Anti-Christ!!!!!

No seriously. As I have said, I am strongly in the opposed camp. It is a fantastic piece. I have a collegue at work with one and we traded for a week. After that time I came to the same conclusion I started with; that bezel is just not for me. I actually strongly considered a diamond bezel (which I do not particularly like) just to get rid of the Buck Rogers font. I appreciate the desire for new buyers. For the arguements in that arena, refer to the Professor's 10,000th post.

Actually it fits small wrists perfectly.. I have small wrists and i love big watches but the b01 fits better than my World (it's so smooth)

Well, my mate will be back from CONTINENTAL ( ) Europe this weekend, so my custodianship of his Chronomat B01 is coming to an end and I just thought I'd give my final thoughts before it departs.

So, has it grown on me any more? Will I miss it?

Answer.....

Yes, on both counts!

It's a very VERY strange thing, but it has definitely grown on me in a way that I never thought it would. It wasn't very long ago that I said I would never buy one, but now I'm not so sure. I've seen new models come along in the past that people have not been keen on to start off with, but over the course of a few weeks, they gradually become more accepted. The SS Seawolf was a case in point. When it first came along I (along with others) didn't hate it, but I definitely preferred the old dial, but within a few weeks/months, the SS version first became accepted and then much loved. Hell, the same thing even happened when the Chronomat Evo came along to replace the older Chronomat and the Crosswind! Now it's an iconic piece.

But the Chronomat B01 was something different, and a full year after it's launch I still didn't remotely like it. So I set my myself thinking about why, and I think I now know the reason. The huge build up and anticipation of the first Breitling in-house movement kind of skewed my thinking about it, and I'm pretty sure that whatever Breitling came up with wouldn't have lived up to my expectation. I guess I felt like a kid waiting for Xmas, when the build up means that the day itself will never be quite as good as you hoped for. And that was my problem with the Chronomat B01. What I was hoping for was something like a 45/46mm "re-imagining" of the Crosswind, or a 45/46mm classically styled Navitimer, or a 45/46mm left-hand crown Chronomatic in the style of those from the 70's............ so when a 43.5mm Chronomat with an odd "non-Breitling" bezel turned up, I for one was hugely disappointed. If I hadn't built up my own expectation of what I wanted to see, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have felt so strongly negative about the B01. As testament to this, it seems that the greatest proportion of B01 buyers are people who are new to the brand - maybe not new to watches, but certainly new to Breitling. These people don't have the baggage and weight of expectation that some of us longer serving Breitling fanatics have. Consequently they aren't tarnished by the familiarity of the past models, and are infinitely more prepared to accept a watch for what it is. The strongest negative reactions have all come from the "old-hands".

By "owning" one (however temporarily), it's given me time to see it on a daily basis in my safe and as a result it's become more familiar and more "Breitling-like" in my eyes. Sure, the bezel font was an odd choice, but as I said in earlier posts, it looks very different outside of pictures and outside of an AD's showroom. But seeing it on a daily basis, I can now accept it as just a "different" Breitling : it's no better than the older rider-tabbed version, but now (crucially) I don't see it as worse in some way. The two can co-exist quite happily as far as I'm concerned, and that for me is the biggest change in my thinking over the last couple of weeks.

As I also said before, the finishing (both of the dial and the case) is immaculate, and the movement is no doubt superb too. (I couldn't resist giving it a full wind the other day  , and it lasted for a full 74 hours and ran approx 3 seconds fast per day during that time, so in that respect it's a fine movement).

So there we are. To those of you who still hate it, all I'd say is if you get a chance to spend some extended time with one, then maybe, just maybe, your opinion will change a little. Or maybe it won't : I don't pretend to assume that everyone will come around to it, but a few just might. (Obviously I've had a very unique chance to have one to hand for an extended period of time, which most of you won't, so I've had something of an advantage here! :D )

So in summary, would I now buy one? Not at the moment............., but you know what..... I just might in future!
