Cartier – Are they worthy of those prices, or are they overpriced watches trading on the famous name of a jeweler? I realize brand hierarchy is subjective, but which do they compare to? They seem to have some REALLY expensive quartz stuff – to the point where I wonder who buys them? Everyone on this forum always discusses Omega, Rolex, IWC, etc…..but I’ve never once seen someone mention Cartier. I think that gives me my answer…..

That said, the Roadster and Santos seem quite nice. No idea what the movements are about, but the designs exude classic gentleman .

I'm becoming a fan of Cartier. I always did the watch snob thing because of the fact that they are perceived as more jewellery, but they have always had some 'classic' looks and some of their newer pieces are really very fine examples of watchmaking. They have a number of in house mechanical movements, but I believe that all of their quartz movements are still ETA sourced.

I don't think that they offer the best value for money, but I do think that they are definitely a fine brand that suffers some perception problems from some people (myself included) by not being exclusively a watch company.

I had a Santos 100 XL and it was one of the best made watches I have ever owned. I loved it and had it had a date I would have kept it.

I love the Santos 100--their best looking piece imo. I was in the market for one about a year back but didnt find the deal I was looking for. I would have dreams about the rose gold and DLC santos 100...super pricey, but soooooo nice!!!!!!! Theyve got some other nice stuff like the calibre 8000 which is made by JLC.

My dad has a Cartier Tank Francaise Steel Chronograph and it looks great but he had a lot of problems with it.. Some were fixed within the first year by warranty the others had to be fixed by his brother. O and i should mention that the repairs my uncle did made the watch handle water pressure much better.. The first year he always showered with the watch until it leaked Cartier took 2 mo. to fix it. So after he took off for showering but kept it on one day to wash his hands and it leaked again send it to them again this time for 1 1/2 mo. send it back not even cleaned so he never again wore it while doing anything with water...When the two years were up he came back from vacation and the watch stopped all together. Without going to cartier again he gave it to his younger bro. the analysis came back that the whole mechanism shot due to water in his previous breakdowns so we went back to the invoices and the only thing Cartier changed was some fancy word they used for a gasket and some sort of seal plus pressure test... My uncle lived in switzerland for about 10 years where he worked for Rado and has some connections there to get stuff anything he wants all it costs is money and he got him a new mechanism i believe its a quarts and now 5 years and counting he takes a shower washes hand even swam with it by accident cause i pushed him in no problem and all it cost was 450 usd and a bottle of grey goose..........

So i would never get a cartier and i hate their service........Don't even let me start telling you the story about my Pasha or my shades it will take a while ...........

Great quality watches. Most are very classy and timeless. I really think my next real watch purchase is going to be a roadster.

JLC have been providing Cartier with movements for over 100 years now - one of the most lasting partnerships. Not sure if JLC has provided any expertise to Cartier to help them become a manufacture, but they definitely have quality mechanical movements across the range.

I used to own a Must21 quartz XL TT - was my first real watch & I loved it - I would still have it if a former girlfriend would not had borrowed it - lol.

I believe that the higher end Cartier watches carry the Seal of Geneva currently due to several acquisitions by the parent company which angered Patek. As a result Patek felt that the seal no long had the same value and therefore they abandoned the very institution they had created more than 100 years ago.

I love the Cartier American Tank which pays homage to the American Expeditionary Force during the Great War; more precisely the American Tank obviously!

Not just Cartier, but yes PP has turned their back on the Seal of Geneva in favour of their own in house controls because a number of watchmakers have been moving towards the Seal of Geneva standard.

Another fan of the Santos 100 here. I've tried it in SS on croc and think it's great, but for the price there's always been something else to get first.

I have the Cartier Roadster chrono and love it. It's by far one of my favorite watches to just look at. The craftsmanship is undeniable and the watch feels so heavy and so great on my wrist. It's definitely an attention getter and I don't see that many around. I don't think you can go wrong with a Cartier regardless of where most watch enthusiast place it among the ranks. They've been holding strong for years and show no signs of slowing down now. Cartier is a symbol watch of sorts, a sign of class and wealth for most, I just really love my Roadster, lol.
