For all of you posting car buying stories, there are a lot of terrible dealers out there. I'm in management at a dealership, and preach and preach about not judging customers on how they look. We had a new GT500 sitting on our showroom floor a couple months ago, and a man dressed in torn jeans and a dirty shirt was looking at it, happens a lot. Well our salesman did a full presentation on the car, and the man turned out to be a very well respected lawyer in the Houston area. He bought the car, and has bought again with us since then.

Good for you!! Now we just need to convince you to transition into the jewelry business. :) I certainly hope your boss appreciates your hard work.

With all the BMW horror stories, I thought I would say that the dealer in my town is actually remarkably good. In an their former urban location, they got a lot of traffic from people just wandering in off of the street as they are out walking around (especially on the 2 or 3 sunny days we get every year). I was in the showroom once when this elderly person came in off of the street wearing dirty sweatpants and a rather threadbare t-shirt. Pretty soon they had him test driving a 750iL.

It is just amazing the variances in levels of service that exist out there for anything, especially luxury things: watches, cars, boats, airplanes, hotels, clothes. About the only thing we can rely on to provide consistent levels of service, at least in the U.S., is the airlines: they're all bad.

Had a BMW dealer tell me that I didn't want an M3, because it was a race car. Idiot salespeople are idiots.

After all my BMW rants and how bad they are I have to confess to buying an M5 off them last year - The car sold itself. No salesman needed - other than to give me the discount i wanted - best car ive ever had.

I make all major purchases (except house where the bank may pull the mortgage if they feel like it) looking as grungy, but clean, as possible. It helps me to determine who really wants to make a sale. I have bought a number of $100K cars from salespeople with less than a month experience because they came over and engaged me when I walked in. The kid at the Chevy dealer where I bought my ZO6 nearly kissed me when I asked him if he would take a check.
