So, am I being 'had over' as a captive customer, for work that probably doesn't need doing, but because we are all in a recession it seems a good way of keeping the profit coming in?

I believe so.
They started to be imperious, acting like the watch is their property.

Hi guys,

Interesting debate, and the comparison to cars, if you parked a Rolls Royce in a garage for 2 years and took it out for an occasional spin and you then took it to a RR dealer, they would want to give it a full service and yes it would cost you.

So you have a RR of a watch and it has never been serviced, time to pay up I am afraid.

I will be sending my Navi for a service this year, it will be three years old, nothing wrong with it, but that's one of the running expenses you have with a watch that's full of lots of little bits of metal all moving against each other.

The original battery on my 2001 Chronoracer Rattrapante expired just before Christmas. I took it to the AD where I bought it and they said it would cost between £50 and £75 for a new cell and reseal. Two weeks later they informed me that they could not perform the work so it had to go back to Breitling. A week after that they told me that Breitling had advised them that it required a service which included a full case and bracelet refurbishment, replacement cell, reseal, new hands at a cost of £292. Now initially I thought this was a bit steep for what was essentially a battery replacement. I took this up with them and they explained that the watch would be returned looking and performing like new. I found the videos on the Breitling site showing the extent of the service and the amount of work involved. The watch is dismantled, the case, bracelet and clasp refurbished to remove any scratches and dents, the movement cleaned, lubricated and recalibrated, the hands replaced and the whole lot is ultrasonically cleaned and reassembled. Then there's a year's warranty on the work.

I bought the watch brand new and have worn it almost every day since 2001 so it has picked up a fair number of scratches to the bracelet and clasp and it no longer looks like new, in fact it looks worn. If it comes back looking like it did when I bought it, £292 starts to look like good value.

After all you if you drive an Aston Martin you can't expect the running costs to be the same as a Ford Fiesta.
