If I buy a used watch and the warranty card doesnt have the date of purchase , what can I do ? How do they know if its still under warranty with Breitling?

Is the card completely blank including the space for the authorized dealer (AD) stamp on the previous page? If so, it was probably originally purchased through one of the "grey market" dealers and as such would not have a factory warranty anyways.

Breitling are really starting to clamp down on this now. It used to be fairly common by ADs as a 'favour' to buyers. I suspect that Breitling's default position will be to say that there is no warranty coverage on the watch unless you can prove differently - a manufacture date less than two years ago for example.

personally i don't like the open date concept at all. ADs should always write the date of purchase. i'm tired of these "bought new in 2006, AD stamped but undated...", can be very ambiguous and misleading in making the buyer think they can just put any date down.

That doesn't seem reasonable given that a watch can sit at an AD for a couple years before selling and could easily have an older date of manufacture. In that case, Breitling should still honor the warranty.

I agree - but put yourself in Breitling's shoes - when are they supposed to assume that the watch was actually sold with the absence of the one thing that is supposedly definitive.

But they should blame the AD and not the consumer and bill the AD for the cost of the repair.

Doesnt Breitling get report on when the watch was purchased? Like a card from the dealer?

No.

They will know when it went to the distributor, and the distributor will know when the watch went to the store but that's it. No tying of serial numbers to actual sales.

I guess that's how watches end up on the grey market. Very interesting, but why such a lax record keeping on such an expensive item. Lets face it. Its not a Casio.

Nice to see consumer spending a lot of money getting the shaft.

Honestly if a company can't 'bend' to help consumer that spend $5000-$20000 for a watch... then they won't see my money.

Especially when the consumer is innocent and it's the fault of a third party (ie AD).

There are dealer agreements, but historically Breitling has been lax in enforcing them.

And remember, ADs think that they are doing buyers a facour by leaving the date blank.
