I am after a chronomat, absolutely love the watch and it looks amazing on. Only problem is that due to my job I need a sweeping second hand that is very easily readable.
So in short, does leaving the chronograph running constantly to have the big second hand in use...:
a) ...cause any damage or extra wear to the movement?
b) ...reduce the power reserve by a significant margin?

It will cause minimal additional wear - certainly nothing noticeable.

It does reduce the power reserve, but if it's a daily wearer then you won't have a problem. If not a daily wearer just wind it once a day.

I was kinda hoping it would cause some harm because as you might be able to tell form my other thread I am also after cockpit and torn between the two...thus making my tough descicion for me!

Just curious as to why you need a running seconds hand? If you want have one running all the time, then go with a non-Chrono watch. I never understood the point of people that run the chrono constantly on their watch.

It seems very specific but I need a clear second hand to determine heart rates accurately.

A non-chrono watch does make sense, but i just love the look and feel of the chronomat.

Personally, I like seeing the big second hand sweeping around. I paid for a mechanical watch, I want to see it!

Then why not just run it when you need to run it? That would seem like the perfect use for a chrono!

its not as simple as it seems, at the times when i will need to the second hand running i will have my hands occupied so need to be able to just glance at the watch, rather than have to unscrew the pushers and start the chrono.

Just get the chronomat and leave it running. Sometimes I let mine run if I get bored. I wear them often enough that ive never noticed any power reserve variation.

BTW, it seems that you must be some type of EMT or something. I just wonder if a thcik metal watch is the best choice since it seems like you might be banging around machines/shelves/patients(!) a lot. What about something like a G-shock during work and the breitling of your choice for afterward?

My advice would be to get the one you like and use a wall clock for your medical-related timing.

As a vet, I agree with you. Its probably fine to wear. I was just thinking EMT where it would be a lot more hectic and traumatic on your watch.
