I was given a pocket watch a year or so ago, and I finally got around to trying to figure out what the heck it's all about. It is an American Watch Co. pocket watch out of Waltham, Mass. which I understand to be reasonably common. What strikes me as interesting is that it appears to be a promotional piece for none other than "Sunlight Soap" which is inscribed on the face as being the soap that "saves time and labour'.

It's a silver pocket watch that could use a bit of refinishing though it still functions. So what do you think... is it worth refinishing or is it a piece of promotional trash? The serial number puts it in the 1890 timeframe.

If you post a movement picture and provide approximate movement diameter then I can give you a more accurate valuation, but generally speaking these are not terribly valuable pieces. If it's just the case that is damaged / in need of TLC then you can find a replacement case (the watches were originally sold separately from the case), but if the dial needs repairing / replacing then with a service you could be looking at spending half the value.

Sooner or later these pieces will increase in value - but then I've been thinking that since the 90s!

I'll try and get some pictures up tomorrow if possible, but I given the condition, and given that fact that this was a freebee I figured it wouldn't be too valuable. I guess the novelty of it being a promotional item made it a little more interesting to me. Pics to follow tomorrow. Thanks Roff

No hurry - I'm away from home until Thursday night anyway so don't have access to my references.
