I am new to the forum. I love the website. Great information. This is my first post. I was wondering what the best type of cloth to use when cleaning or wiping down my watches. Do I use a standard jewlery cloth or is there a special cloth I should buy?

For daily "get the fingerprints off" a nice microfiber cloth or lint free handkerchief works great. For the more thourough cleanings (every 2-3 months depending on use and the depths of your obsessive-compulsive disorder[therefore every weekend for D8]) Sunshine or Cape Cod cleaning cloths do a great job. A quick search hewre will give more details on those than you could ever want. I also tend to wash mine (bracelet and case--not straps) with a very soft toothbrush and gentle soap under warm tap water. That does more than you might think. Welcome and keep it shiny!

I echo what BoneDoc said. Mild soap and a toothbrush work great for more in depth cleanings. Use a Cap Cod polishing cloth to get the scratches/scuffs out every few months. When I get fingerprints and such on my watch, I'll get my hands soapy and wash it, then dry with a cotton bath towel. I do this at least every other day.

Just picked up a small pouch of Cape Cod polishing clothes from ACE Hardware. Wow these things work great for the scratches and scuffs. Thank you for the advice all.

FYI, when using the Cape Cod cloth, I would recommend going in straight back and forth strokes, following the 'grain' of the steel. I wouldn't recommend swirling it around or else you may get swirlies all over the bracelet/case.

I was reccomended to use one of the finest abrasive materials for swirls you can use.....toothpaste........then a small amount of clear window cleaner on the lint free cloth then wipe it dry.........Although showering with the Ling on cleans it the window cleaner gets rid of any left over soapy deposits.......a pal of mine has a very shiny SA and he swears by putting some stainless steel car cleaner (the clear liquid type) on his cloth first then wiping off with a clean terry towel or micro fibre cloth............my SA is brand new and so far no scratches or marks are evident........so its the shower and dry off method for now............

thx Zirotty, I only did the individual bracelet links so there was no room to swirl but i will keep that as a good tip. Will the chemicals in the cloth damage the crystal?

They are abrasive and have been known to polish away the anti-reflective coating. Dont use it on the crystal.

In actual fact Boney, my alleged obsessive-compulsive disorder means that I don't use the Cods very often for fear of wearing my watch away to nothing! No, in all seriousness, I tend to simply just wash my watches with mild soap luke-water water and a very soft toothbrush, before thoroughly rinsing it off to remove any soap. The Cods only come out once in a blue moon to remove specific scratches.

My SA is 2 months old now and it is full of small scratches on the bracelet and some on the case as well. I guess it is normal, the stainless steel surface gets scratches extremely easy.

Got my Cape cods in the mailbox a few days ago and i am polishing for the first time soon. I hope it works as well as people say.

I doubt it, but it won't do it much good either. I always take my straps off, that way you can get between the lugs.

Threw that out there for the guy who has posted more about keeping his watches clean and shiny than anyone else. Even you would have a hard time polishing steel watches to nothing, since you do not like gold.
