Hello All, Archie42 posting a followup for all those people thinking of leaving the Breitling fold.

To summarise I sold my Breitling Navitimer - old navi II - to fund the purchase of a special Patek Philippe.

I bought a white gold Patek 5107. This is a Calatrava with auto 324 movement, date display and 2nd hand. The watch also features a display back.

Whilst I love my Patek - and I would never sell her - I do miss owning a Breitling.

The Patek is stunning... yes - I get total devotion when walking into a store and showing my watch.... but... I really miss the ling on my wrist!

I find it hard to descibe....

YES - I got a personalised x-mas card from 1 of the Patek owners.... but I miss my ling....

I think that's the difference between KNOWING something is precious, valuable & beautiful, and actually FEELING it deep in your heart!

To me the Patek (& many, many other fine chronological instruments) LOOKS stunning, but the Breitlings... well they just make me FEEL warm-fuzzy-gooey-in-a-world-peace kindda way...!

Happy New Year! (& from me at least, welcome back!  )

Nice to know Archie...but as you know as well as anybody, its not about what you think about it...its about what the people at your High School reunion think about it. Plus, it goes great with your borrowed Mercedes.

This looks like the PP you had up for sale on ebay but it did not sell?

Happy New Year Archie.
I'm far from a watch expert, very far indeed. Congratulations on the Patek, I am assuming, by your post, it's an expensive watch?
If it makes you happy, do it.

I guess they kicked you out of the PP forum, i hope you didn't tell them the reunion story. The Patek is nice but useless except for telling time and impressing people, my Breitling has many functions and so do all other Breitlings besides telling time and looking shiny, besides when you wear a PP no one outside knows its what it is unless you poke it in their face and tell them what it is, looks like a regular watch nothing special, but when people see the bling on your wrist then they give you attention which you crave and that's why you miss owning a Breitling not for any other reason.

I think the PP is a beautiful watch, understated elegance.

Happy New Year

I know what you mean. I sold my last one 2 months ago and regret doing it. If only I can find myself a Skyland.

Your Subject Title for this post really hit me between the eyes the second I saw it! I was out for a walk after dinner, and thinking how much I still would like to have a Breitling! By the way, that Patek Philippe is an absolutley goreous masterpiece. I would normall say it would look better with a plain dial and no date window, but in this case I will make an exception. A study of classical, simple elegance!
I digress. Anyway, this past year has seen me sell or trade no less than four Breitlings. And now I have 3 Omegas, and 1 Rolex, none of which I want to part with. Lately, I have been reading a lot of posts on the Omega and Rolex forums - especially Rolex - about owners who have had the ceramic bezels damaged - or rather "shattered" - because they have knocked them against somethig. Unable to repair - expensive to replace! Even the aluminum bezels on many of the brands are easily susceptible to scratching. Bring on Breitling! All of the models I owned have the older steel bezel, with the rider tabs. I can't tell you how many times I have knocked the watch against some object, only to have it catch on the rider tab. Yes, it catches and brings the bezel round the dial a bit, but it sure protects the watch. Even getting the odd scratch on the main part of the bezel is nothing compared to a scratch on the other types.
For other reasons, too, I really miss Breitling. My second - and favourite - was a Colt SuperOcean automatic, purchased in 1997, and never left my wrist over 10 years. Tons of scratches on it, but it always looked wonderful when I washed it up under the tap with a bit of dish detergent!
Enjoy the Patek Philippe as I enjoy my Omegas and Rolexes, but some day a Breitling, I feel, will be part of our collections once again!
Happy New Year!
Carl
