After spending a couple of weeks looking for watches to buy my GF for Christmas, I've accidentally triggered the watch beast lurking inside me. I guess I should have seen this coming, but now I need to decide on what present I should be buying myself this year. I mean it's only right that I treat myself to something...my sister, mother, and I did agree to not exchange presents this year and to each do something for charity instead (not that this would be my act of charity...).

Anyway, the contenders this time around - for some reason, I'm very fixated on a stainless watch with white face.

1.) Cartier Pasha Seatimer Chrono (40.5mm)

2.) Rolex (I know...) Datejust 2 (41mm)

The Cartier would probably be about 15% more expensive than the Rolex but both are in the same ballpark. For reference, I already own a standard Rolex Submariner w/date and a Breitling Chronomat Evo (stainless w/slate grey).

I know that Rolexes are a bit cliche'd and ubiquitous (the Sub was my grail when I graduated college and I had to have it as soon as I saved the cash), but the new larger Datejust just caught my eye from the display. The 5mm increase in size for 2009 really ups the watch's wrist presence without ruining the overall 'classiness' of the piece. And I never thought I'd say this, but the new bracelet with polished middle links really works in this instance - it dresses the piece up quite a bit and looks (to my eye) more substantial than the original jubilee bracelet. The picture posted here really doesn't give adequate credit to the watch's 'presence' or weight on the wrist.

And the Cartier - I've long been thinking that if I were to get back into buying expensive pieces, the Cartier would be it. It's just so elegant and understated for a sport chrono (relatively speaking, that is). Definitely quiet classiness.

What say you? I'd love to hear thoughts from the board.

41mm Datejust without a question. I tried them on at a local AD and really liked how they looked and felt.

Jeez deciding between a Cartier and a Rolex :?

I think I'd go for the Rolex out of those choices. There are some Cartiers that I would consider, but not that one.

Another vote for the Rolex. Marginally bigger (which is a good thing!), and more of a classic than the Cartier IMHO. Cartier alway says "one for the ladies" to me. Apologies to any gentlemen Cartier owners here, but they always seem more of a jewellery make to me. (And an ex-girlfrined of mine warbled on incessantly about her buying one, so that's clearly coloured my view!)

No doubt. I really did have my heart set on the Cartier but was really surprised at how much I liked the Datejust in a larger size. I never considered myself a fan of anything but the Rolex sport models but the DJ just sits on the wrist very well and has a nice pop to it.

Rolex for me as well. I'm not anti-Cartier (I tried on a Santos 100 a while ago and was very impressed) but I'm not a big fan of the Pasha styling. The DJ is a classic look, very difficult to go wrong with that.

I would get the New DJ II.

The size has always been the deal breaker for me.

I plan to own one down the road. 41mm perfect!
