Lads,

I need some advice. I have a Sony a350 DSLR and over the last few days I've taken some pics. I tried on Sunday to take some macro shots of my watches so set the camera to the macro setting and away I went. For whatever reason when I tried to do a really close-up dial shot like some of the ones you lot do, the camera wouldn't allow me to take a picture. I had to be about 2ft away before it would capture the image.

Anyway, do I need to buy a macro lens for close ups? I was using a 18-70mm 3.5-5.6 lens if that makes a difference.

Did you have the lens at full zoom? Many lenses (even macro ones) won't focus at close range when they're zoomed in.

Otto, If i remember correctly I did have it at full zoom but I'm sure I tried the other way too! I'll check that out in the next couple of days. I really need someone to give me a crash course rather than reading the instructions, I hate instructions!

That's true for many cameras - if you use the zoom you can't get "up-in-the-dial"-close with the macro.

Just take away the zoom and more or less just put the watch directly onto the lens (or maybe 1 centimeter away).

I tried what you said making sure the zoom was 'out' but still no joy! I am going to revert to the instruction book for a change!

Hopefully it will help and I can share the benefits of my new founf knowledge. Then again, my pictures could still be crap!

Hardly a photography expert, but......

Sometimes you have to change the focus to manual for macro.

Another good thought Roff! I'll give it a go. I think the focus was set to automatic.
